Kikkor Shoes Shine Pure On Cape Breton Golf Adventure

Kikkor Pure Shoe Review

What better way to test out some golf shoes then to wear them for 5 rounds of golf in 6 days. That's exactly what I did with a pair of Kikkor Pure - Black Eagle Golf Shoes while golf vacationing on Cape Breton Island earlier this month. I've done a few Kikkor Shoe Reviews previously but was excited to take these on the road for an intense Cabot Breton golf experience.

I had the pleasure of testing out my Kikkor Pure's at The Lakes Golf Club, Highlands Links, Le Portage Golf Club and for two rounds at Cabot Links.

Look
The Pure's classic wing-tip toe design is just downright cool looking. I definitely fell in love with the classic look and it has since become my favorite golf shoe. During my golf adventure in Cape Breton I had many people on and off the course ask me about the Pure Black Eagle. People really liked the look and many asked where they could get them. Although they have that classic look the Kikkor Pure definitely has plenty of modern technology to stand up to other non traditional spiked shoes.

Feel
For me the Kikkor Shoes just keep getting better in the comfort department. With the added Kikkor Komfort Foam Technology in tongue and collar and the two sets of insoles (one thick, one thinner) you can customize these golf shoes to your liking. On the course amazingly comfortable and lightweight whether I was walking at Cabot Links or lounging at their outdoor patio the Pure's get top marks in the comfort/feel department.

Performance
What better way to test out the performance of a golf shoe then to expose them to the gamete of East Coast Summer Weather; sun, wind, rain, cool, hot, and damp conditions. The Pure was the first Kikkor shoe that I've reviewed that didn't have traditional spikes so I was very curious at how Kikkor’s Diacon Embedded Spike System would perform as far as traction goes.

For the most part Kikkor’s Diacon Embedded Spike System performed well although during my round at Highlands Links. It did rain on and off and with the added moisture I did have a few instances of slippage. Both on the tee and during some uphill and side hill lies.

On the other end of the spectrum Le Portage Golf Club hadn't received any rain in 6 weeks when I laced up my Kikkor Pure's for a round with Dave the GM and members Keith and Richard. The Pure's handled the drier conditions with ease.

Value
Kikkor has a wide variety of shoes available on their website and the Kikkor Pure - Black Eagle shoe falls around the middle ground in price at $109. A great value considering they have a full grain leather upper and Kikkor offers a one-year waterproof warranty. Kikkor also throws in two sets of laces and two sets of insoles (2 sets for neutral or wide fit).

Conclusion
If your a regular reader of my blog you know I love what James Lepp and his company Kikkor Golf have been doing the last three years they only seem to be getting better with age and that's great for golfers looking for a great quality golf shoe. Although I did experience some slippage during my round at Highlands Links the Pure is still one of my favorite golf shoes and has become my go to golf shoe.

Canadian Hopeful In Hamilton Graham DeLaet

You have to like Graham DeLaet enthusiasm for playing this week at his "National Championship" in Hamilton. With his health issues seemingly gone he's a good bet at winning this week. I like the fact he hits it long (12th in driving distance 303.9 yds) and his GIR% is good (31st at 66.7%). If he can eagle the two par 5s a few times during the 4 days anything is possible right.

Graham DeLaet will be sporting some great apparel this week from our friends at Sligo Wear. Love the Canadian themed Sunday outfit wouldn't that look sweet coming down the 18th for victory at Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

Review: Cape Breton More Than Just Great Golf

Upon reflection of my golf trip to Cape Breton Nova Scotia I not only break out in a smile when I think of the great golf courses I played (The Lakes, Highland Links, Le Portage and Cabot Links) but all the little things that made the golf experience even better. Here are just a few things you might want to try if you are in Cape Breton.

Cabot Links Clam Chowder w/ A Cold Beer On Their Outdoor Patio

A perfect way to end your round, Cabot Links clam chowder is a tasty meal in a bowl. Sitting on their outdoor patio enjoying a cold pint and taking in the sunset is just about perfection.

Hell Bay English Ale From Hell Bay Brewing Company

Whale Watching At Cheticamp

If you've never seen whales in their natural habitat before whale watching at Cheticamp is a must.  After a round at Le Portage I can't think of a better way to end the day with a evening whale watching tour from Whale Cruisers. It was my wife's first whale experience one that she'll never forget and one my kids can't wait to do. Definitely beat my whale watching experience from a few years ago on the West Coast.

Pilot Whales Off The Coast Of Cheticamp

Seafood Dinner and Sweets At Main Street Restaurant & Bakery

A great place to head after a tough round at Highland Links is the Main Street Restaurant & Bakery in Ingonish Beach. You can feast on all things seafood. On my plate below a Lobster, Shrimp, Snow Crab, Shark medley, my wife had a lovely Seafood Pasta. Topping it off with a peace of fresh Coconut Cream Pie was the end of another perfect day on the Cabot Trail.

Hard to Choose....Lemon, Coconut Cream, Strawberry.....

Seafood Medley

Glenora Distillery Tour

Even if your not a whiskey connoisseur the Glenora Distillery Tour is downright interesting. Made from water from MacLellan’s Brook Glenora is home of Glen Breton North America's 1st Single Malt Whisky. The shots of whisky at the end of the tour are great too.

 Cheers

Rickie Fowler's Sports Puma Plaid For The Open

With less then two days til the Open Championship starts as always I'm curious to see what the top players will be wearing in the rainy, blustery conditions at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. Golf Course Review: Top 5 Reasons To Use A Caddy At Cabot Links

After being home a few days after my trip to Cape Breton I've had time to reflect on a lot of things. One thing that stands out for me is my experience playing authentic links golf at Cabot Links with a caddy. I initially thought I'd just use a pull cart as I do most days golfing here in Ottawa but was pleasantly surprised when Joe Robinson the Director of Golf Operations met me at the first tee with our caddies. The experience of having caddies for two rounds at Cabot Links was top notch. Thanks Jim and Stephen you were great caddies!

1) Having a caddy will help you save a at least 5 to 6 strokes a round maybe more if it's the first you've played Cabot Links. The caddies have played the course extensively so they know where to hit the ball and where not to as well as yardages and course strategy.

2) The pros have them so why not hackers like us. This is probably as close as we'll get to playing like the pros on the PGA Tour

3) The caddies are all from around the area of Inverness. From various backgrounds: retired teachers, businessmen and students etc. These guys are great for stories both golf and non-golf. If your visiting the area they guide you the right direction on where to visits, eat and stay.

4) If your round is going South the caddy is their for moral support.

5) Caddy holds your clubs while you take in the many views from Cabot Links 18 holes.

Keltic Lodge The Pot of Gold

It was only fitting today to see a beautiful rainbow over the majestic Keltic Lodge Resort. It truly is a special place.

We arrived late yesterday and decided on a late supper at Keltic Lodge's Purple Thistle Dining Room. We were treated to a perfect dinner with a touch of Cape Breton flair. My main entry was delicious the blackened swordfish with a special blend of spices served over top a sweet potatoes/snow crab hash drizzled with Nova Scotia maple syrup. Our appetizer was pretty tasty to; Atlantic sea scallops with peppered bacon drizzled with a port reduction. With various hiking trails, Highland Links Golf Course, beaches, sea kayaking and various other outdoor activities Keltic Lodge is truly the place to call your headquarters. Be sure to follow my Twitter feed and Instagram for some great Cape Breton moments.

The Lakes Awe-Inspiring

What a start to my Cape Breton Golf Adventure. We arrived late into the Sydney airport and drove to the beautiful Birches At Ben Eoin Country Inn where my wife and I were greated by the lovely owners Larry and Barb Macherson. After a great night of rest after a long day of travel we had a lovely breakfast at the Birches Country Inn. The vegetable quiche was a tasty treat.

When I went down to the car to get my clubs a golf cart was waiting for me fully stocked with tees/balls/divot tools/towel, a really nice touch. The Birches has a great relationship with The Lakes Golf Course and being a stones throw away from the course is ideal for people visiting the area. Highly recommend staying at The Birches Larry and Barb are great people and they went out of their way to accommodate our needs.

My tee time was at 1030am and I arrived early to chat with Eric one of the Managers of the course and get a small bucket to loosen up before my round. The Lakes Golf Course is built on a beautiful piece of land overlooking the Bras d'Or Lakes and Graham Cooke definitely knew what he was doing when he designed this gem. Highlights for me were the diversity of holes and way the various rock outcrops and streams were used to enhance each hole. My favorite holes had to be the challenging 5th hole a beautifully sloped par 4 with a babbling brook near the green to test your 2nd shot. As well as the following hole the picturesque par 4 6th. I managed a par a there with a pretty good 100 yd bunker shot. I will do a more extensive review soon as I only brushed the surface of this Cape Breton gem. I'm writing this at the Keltic Lodge at Ingonish where we've travelled to next, stay tuned for a round at Highland Links.
