For the adventurer in all of us
Loopers: A Caddie’s Twenty-Year Golf Odyssey Book Review
You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy John Dunn’s Loopers: A Caddie’s Twenty-Year Golf Odyssey. In fact at numerous points during John’s stories of decade’s worth of being a club caddy from St. Andrews to Augusta, I hearkened back to my years of tree planting the B.C. Coast and travelling around in between. So Loopers is a book for those of us who either once had a life of nomadic means or who just like the thrill of adventure and a good story.
There’s a lot to like about Loopers. Each chapter is easy to read because of John’s great way of recounting his hilarious story from the past 20 years as a club caddie. It’s interesting to hear John talk about the different golfers (like Bill Gates and Arnold Palmer) he’s caddied for, some more fascinating than others.
As someone who writes about golf. I was fascinated about reading what a club caddie’s life is like. I’ve only had a caddy once and it was last Summer during my Cape Breton Golf Adventure. Having a caddy at Cabot Links definitely made the experience that much better and special. A caddy isn’t just the guy who lugs around your golf bag at that golf course you’re just dying to play. He’s also the guy who guides you around the golf course giving you insight, inspiration and maybe the directions to a good pub down the road.
From reading Loopers I don’t think John Dunn ever expected that his summer job as a caddy at the local course in Connecticut might turn into twenty years of Looping but it sure makes for some great stores.
John’s descriptions of the many caddies he befriended along with their shenanigans were a treat to read. Hearing about his caddy adventures at great golf locations like Augusta, Bandon Dunes, Shinnecock, and St. Andrews were inspiring. It’s fun having never been to any of these places to hear the side of the caddy.
One of the best chapters is when John hops on a plane to Scotland to see about a job at St.Andrews. He basically just walks in and gets a caddy job there with no experience. Grabs a bib and he's out on the course, priceless.
John Dunn's Loopers has everything you need for a great summer read, pick it up today!
