My Top Three Holes At Cobble Beach Resort

Had the pleasure of playing two rounds last week at Cobble Beach Resort and here's my favorite holes from this spectacular Georgian Bay Golf Course ranked #17 on ScoreGolf.com Top 59 Greatest Canadian Public Courses.

Chi-Cheemaun #7
Par 5
527 yds. Regular Tee

Take a breathe you're at the highest point of the course. A downhill panoramic par 5. If you can get it over the hill with your drive you might just have a shot at the green. A difficult par 5 with an undulating fairway and a well guarded green that again is tiered. Remember putts will break towards Georgian Bay. Par is a good score on this hole.

Ruin #10
Par 4
375 yds. Regular Tee

You start the back nine with this uphill par 4. If played into the win even tougher to get onto this green in regulation. The tiered green sits beautifully in an amphitheater with many runoffs. Plays like a par 5 in my books. Be happy with a bogey and move on.

Lighthouse #17
Par 3
127 yds. Regular Tee

Regardless of what tees you use this downhill par 3 is a beauty with the hole . With deep bunkers in the front and a natural marsh back and right picking the right club is paramount even though the green is quite large. With various tiers to the green depending on where the pin position is a two putt is a good thing at the Lighthouse hole.

Kingmade Jerky Review: The Cadillac Of Jerkies

It's hard sometimes to find great snacks to eat on the golf course. To many times we just get caught up in the moment and stuff down a hot dog and beer at the turn. Healthier tasty options are better for us and produce a better golfing experience.

Kingmade Jerky sent me one of their three packs of jerky which includes one bag of each flavor:

CLASSIC RECIPE FLANK STEAK JERKY is crafted with tender cuts of beef flank steak, artfully seasoned in a sublime blend of steakhouse spices and brown sugar then meticulously slow-cooked to perfection

BUFFALO STYLE FLANK STEAK JERKY is crafted with tender cuts of beef flank steak, artfully seasoned with mouthwatering brown-sugary, vinegary, cayenne-peppery Buffalo style sauce, then meticulously slow cooked to perfection

SWEET CHILI PEPPER FLANK STEAK JERKY is crafted with tender cuts of beef flank steak, artfully seasoned with a nose-tickling blend of sweet brown sugar and spicy chili peppers, then meticulously slow cooked to perfection

Just look at the ingredients of Kingmade's Sweet Chili Pepper Flank Steak Jerky.

INGREDIENTS - SWEET CHILI PEPPER - Beef, Water, Brown Sugar (sugar, cane molasses), Soy Sauce (water, soybeans, salt, wheat flour, potassium sorbate), Natural Smoke Flavoring, Minced Garlic (garlic, water, citric acid), Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Chili Powder, Black Pepper, Cayenne Pepper, Red Pepper.
Contains Wheat, Soy

Take a look at the jerky you might be eating these days bet there's a few things ingredients you can't even pronounce. That's the beauty of Kingmade's Jerky it just tastes like amazing flank steak jerky. Made just like when owner Jeff King’s startup business began in his kitchen and then blossomed out onto the PGA Tour. Jeff used a dehydrator purchased at a Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World Inc. store in Texas and created his custom-seasoned jerky out of beef flank steak strips. Plain and simple that's what your still getting when you buy Kingmade Jerky.

Kingmade's jerky tastes great, the beef flank steak is tender not chewy and tough like most of the jerky out there. I like the fact they have three flavors to suit everyone's taste as well.

Classic Recipe Flank Steak Jerky
- The Classic is for those that just like good down home jerky. Very mild spices, very low on salt and really hard not to eat the whole pack. I like to mix a piece of the Classic with the Buffalo just for fun.

Buffalo Style Flank Steak Jerky -
The Buffalo Style is for those that enjoy their jerky like their wings. The Buffalo style comes in that in your face style that lingers in your mouth for awhile.

Sweet Chili Pepper Flank Steak Jerky- The Sweet Chili I enjoyed the most. A hint of sweetness with a nice spicy finish. This style is for those that like their jerky with a bit more kick. This bag went pretty quick.

For anyone wanting to test out Kingmade's Jerky I suggest buying their three pack at $22.99. You can try all three flavors and then after purchase more of your favorite from their collection. Money well spent on a healthy tasty jerky for the golf course or whatever activity you spend time enjoying. Nice also to see that Kingmade has a distributor in Canada. Well done Kingmade!

Golf And Spa - A Perfect Match At Cobble Beach

Great golf isn't the only thing available at Cobble Beach

This past week I had the pleasure of staying a couple of nights at Cobble Beach Resort just a few minutes drive north of Owen Sound. It was a perfect setting for my wife and I to get away for a couple of days and relax. I won't talk here about the great golf course Doug Carrick built on a beautiful piece of property in the Georgian Bluffs Township, I'll leave that for another post.  What I will talk about here is my fabulous experience at using the spa at Cobble Beach which is located on the lower level of the Clubhouse.

My wife loves a spa and on most of my golf getaways she has a spa treatment. At Highlands Links in Nova Scotia and closer to home at Smugglers Glen my wife gives rave reviews to these type of places where she can relax and enjoying a massage, facial, manicure, pedicure or whatever spa treatment. I have never indulged until this past week at Cobble Beach.

After two days of golfing I decided to have a facial and a massage on our last day before our trek home to Ottawa. The massage was a perfect way to relax those tired golf muscles and I highly recommend one for all golfers. The facial was simply amazing and if more people had facials I think the world would be a happier place. Allison did a great job with my massage and facial and was attentive for answering any questions I had. After my great experience at Cobble Beach I will now search out spa treatments when I book any golf getaways. I may even beat my wife to booking a spa treatment next time.

Cobble Beach Spa is equipped with the following:
  • Couples massage room
  • Steam room and Jacuzzi for use pre or post-treatment
  • Fitness and exercise room
  • Private treatment rooms
  • Manicure and pedicure stations
  • Product display
  • Relaxation room
  • Body treatments with Vichy shower

Review: Imperial Headwear -The Faroe - Keeping Cool On The Links

I believe this is the first time for a hat review on this blog. Over the years I've done many reviews but have never done a review on a golf hat.

A good hat is so important when golfing and I know many golfers that have there favorites. When I was given a chance to review The Faroe Hat by Imperial Headwear, I really had no idea about the Imperial company even though they've been around since 1916. Which definitely says a lot about the Imperial brand.

The thing that interested me the most about this hat is that it was powered by Coolcore a patented chemical free fabric that actually makes the hat cooler. Now I'm one to golf in all sorts of weather and when it's hot most of the time I don't even wear a hat (Yes I lather up my head with sunscreen). The reason being I actually find wearing a hat makes me feel hotter. Now I've tried many types of hats conventional and lightweight golf hats but most of the time I go without a hat.

Here's what I found out about this hat by Imperial Headwear after giving it a thorough testing period:

1) It actually was quite pleasant wearing this hat golfing and I did find it much cooler than any hat I've worn golfing over the years.

2) Spraying the hat with some water actually made the hat cooler. Coolcore fabric actually works.

3) An all white hat isn't a bad thing. I've always shied away from white hats but the style of the Faroe and the cooling proprieties of Coolcore gives this hat top marks.

 The Specs:
100% poly pique mesh fabric
Soft structured profile with a micro-velcro elastic loop closure
Fabric cools up to 30% cooler than skin temperature when wet
Wicks and transports moisture, then regulates evaporation for cooling effect

The Faroe hat comes in five differents colors and retails for $35USd which is very reasonable for a golf hat that keeps you cool. Imperial has other styles of golf hats with Coolcore including The Lundey, a trucker style hat and the Kaldur Visor.

Now I still golf most of the time without a hat but when I do the Faroe by Imperial is my first choice. I dare you to get it wet!

Jason Day wins 2015 PGA Championship Whistling Straits Video

Jason Day won his first career major with this tap-in on the 18th green at Whistling Straits to conclude the 2015 PGA Championship. Overnight leader Jason Day painted a 5-under-par 33-34=67 in the final round of the 97th PGA Championship to claim the title at 20-under 268, a tournament and major championship record in relation to par, and three shots better than runner-up Jordan Spieth.

Impressive Day bounces back with Canadian Open victory

On the back of a disappointing end to his Open Championship campaign, Jason Day bounced back in style to claim the RBC Canadian Open by a single shot from Bubba Watson. The Australian had arrived at the Glen Abbey Golf Course near Toronto having narrowly missed out on competing in a play-off at the Open, leaving a critical final putt short at St Andrews and being forced to watching on as Zach Johnson went on to lift the Claret Jug for the first time. But rather than sit back and think about what could have been, Day took the positives away from recording his best finish at The Open Championship and racked up his second tournament win of the season by pipping Watson to the post in the Canadian Open.

Having started the final day behind overnight leader and local favourite David Hearn before reeling off a string of birdies on his way to a round of 68 to finish 17 below par. While Hearn's round of 72 killed off any chance of the local winner that golf fans have been desperately waiting for, those in attendance showed their appreciation for an impressive round of golf from the Australian star. If you feel like having a flutter you should first check out Bonus Canada for a list of all the latest sports betting bonuses. Hearn had started the day attempting to be the first Canadian to win the tournament since Pat Fletcher in 1954, but ultimately came up short in a brave effort, finishing two shots behind Day in third place.

Despite picking up two bogies, Day's six birdies were enough to see him add a fourth PGA title to his collection. But while the 27-year old continues to prove he is one of the best in the world, that maiden major victory still eludes him, and Day would have probably swapped this title in a heartbeat for another chance at that putt in The Open. After a modest top-30 finish at Augusta, Day finished tied for ninth in the U.S. Open before his fourth place finish at St Andrews. With six top-five

by  Keith Allison

For Bubba Watson, a run over five birdies across six holes saw him finish runner-up with a round of 69 to finish 16-under for the tournament. While the left-hander climbed to third in the official rankings in June following his Travelers Championship success, it's been something of a tough season for the two-time Masters winner. Having finished tied for 39th at Augusta in April, Watson missed the cut at the U.S. Open and then The Open, continuing his poor run of form at both events and failing to prove those doubters wrong who claim the American doesn't have the game to win any other major than the Masters.

Review: Devereux Golf Shirts | Stylin' On and Off the Golf Course

I've been doing this golf blog thing for awhile now and when it comes to golf apparel I've seen many companies go by the wayside. Whether it's poor marketing, bad timing or not so great product some apparel companies just don't have what it takes for that road to success.

One of those companies that seems to be doing things right including expanding their distribution in Canada is Devereux. Founded in 2013 in Los Angeles, California Devereux is truly bringing it to a different level  offering men "Proper Threads". I had a chance recently to do a Q&A with the Creative Director from Devereux, Robert Brunner and from his answers you know Devereux has a great foundation. Check it out.

I was first introduced to what Devereux had to offer when I had the chance to test out a couple of their golf polos from their “Christina O Collection” the Delphine Polo in Steel/Navy/Sage and the Argo Polo in Apricot.

 The Delphine Polo in action

The three things that stood out for me with these golf shirts

1) The style is perfect both for on and off the golf course. You'll get compliments on the first tee plus later when you're having a bourbon at the bar. Color schemes and style of the golf shirt are all original.

2) The comfort and fit is amazing. When golfing this is the shirt I want to put on, the athletic fit is ideal for that Saturday round with buddies. No problem wearing these shirts out for a nice dinner with friends and family as well.

3) I've been wearing my Devereux golf shirts for awhile now and through all the washings they still retain there great color, fabric texture and perfect collars.

Details:

The Delphine - Steel/Navy/Sage

The Delphine is a modern shirt with a bold print across the chest, it brings the collection a modern flare via a unique, two-color contrasting print. A very playful and easy-going piece for the course or beach.

Argo - Apricot

Timeless, it's the collection's most detailed shirt. The Argo is a revamped version of the white collar polo, featuring a hidden button-down collar and self fabric piping -- for a sophisticated look. After 18 holes, you're ready to sit down at a five-course dinner in this classic shirt.

I initially didn't think I'd like the apricot color of the Argo shirt but it's a great fun summer color and it's now one of my favorite shirts for golfing or just going out.

The golf shirts I tested will run you about $90-$95 USD (Now on sale $58-$61) pretty reasonable for a high quality polo.

Be sure to check out "Proper Threads" Devereux's fashion and lifestyle blog on its website.

The Proper Threads blog posts articles weekly dealing with fashion, style, travel and events, and can be found at: http://properthreads.dvrxgolf.com
