Surprises From The PGA Tour Season

If I was more of a golf betting efficianto, boy would I have placed some cash on the likes of Webb Simpson, Keegan Bradley, Mark Wilson and Bill Haas. I had heard of Webb Simpson before this season but who would of predicted a season where he's slugging it out at the final event of the PGA Tour season with Luke Donald for the PGA Tour money title. Call me crazy but I'm sure no one had Webb Simpson on their radar. What a season he's amassed. Two wins 12 top 10s and going from #208 in the Official World Golf Rankings to #10. I can see Luke Donald being there at the end fighting for the money title but Webb Simpson. Nice going Webb.

Keegan Bradley from Woodstock Vermont  had no status on the PGA Tour in 2010 and was sitting at #328 in the OWGR. What does his Nationwide Tour Grad do but win twice on the big Tour including a mind blowing Major the PGA Championship. Now if I would of only been a golf betting man, why did I not put down a hundred on Keegan. If I only knew the season Keegan would conjure up. Along with his two wins he had 5 top 10s and won the Grand Slam of Golf.

Mark Wilson is one little dude and I'm sure he gets mistaken for pretty much anything else other than a Pro Golfer but this short hitter managed to knock out two wins before the end of February of this year. He cooled off after that but how does a guy who drives the ball 6 yards under the tour average of 290 yds end up with two wins I'll never know but keep it up Mark!

Bill Haas had a very steady season amassing 7 top 10s and making 22 of 26 cuts but it was his remarkable win at the Tour Championship and subsequently being crowned the FedEx Cup Champ that was more of a surprise. Yes he was consistent all season but again my money was on others like Luke Donald and Webb Simpson. I guess that's why I don't bet alot on the outcome in golf. Way to up in the air because you never know who's going to put 4 solid rounds together for the W.

Couples Wears Golf Street Premier En Route To Victory

Had the chance early in the season to review some ECCO Golf Street Golf Shoes. Really liked the style of golf shoes, great for wearing on and off the course. Incredibly comfortable and fashionable shoes from ECCO. Nice to see ECCO Golf staff player Fred Couples wear the company's Golf Street Premier while capturing the AT&T Championship last week. Freddie is one smooth swinging stylin' golfer. Good spokesmen for ECCO and their new offerings.

ECCO Staff Player Fred Couples Wins AT&T Championship Wearing Golf Street Hybrid Shoe
Claims Seven-Stroke Victory for Sixth Champions Tour Title
(Markham, Ontario) -- Danish brand ECCO -- maker of the world's most comfortable, technically-advanced footwear -- confirms that Staff Player Fred Couples wore its Golf Street Premier hybrid shoes while capturing the Champions Tour's AT&T Championship this past weekend at TPC San Antonio's Canyons Course.

Showcasing the ECCO logo on his headwear, the 51-year-old earned his second win of the season by firing rounds of 65, 62 and 66. His 193 total set the tournament record and placed him seven shots clear of the field. With the victory, Couples moves to eighth place in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, despite only competing in nine events this year.

"I haven't had a seven-shot lead since '92 or '90 or whenever the heck it was," said Couples. "It's a weird feeling, but once we got to the back nine I played much better and I pulled away to a lead that was plenty."

In 2010, Couples became the first player in history to win three of his first four Champions Tour events. He went on to claim a fourth title and was honored as the Champions Tour Rookie of the Year and Byron Nelson Award winner.

"Fred always looks great and seems to play his best when competing in Golf Street," says Jesper Thuen, ECCO Global Marketing Manager - Golf. "This was a spectacular win that continues the momentum for our shoes in the hybrid category that ECCO pioneered."

The first and only true hybrid sport-casual shoe designed to be worn both on and off the course, Golf Street showcases a completely unique outsole with approximately 100 molded traction bars and more than 800 tractions angles. Providing superb grip in all conditions, the wear-resistant and highly durable outsole is constructed from a TPU material that has been shown to last five times longer than rubber. New for 2012 are models that respectively showcase performance textile and reptile printed leather uppers.

ECCO golf shoes are also worn in competition by scores of international Tour stars, including Graeme McDowell, Thomas Bjorn, Stuart Appleby, Thongchai Jaidee, Aaron Baddeley, Thorbjørn Olesen, Andreas Hartø, John Bickerton, Bradley Dredge, Belen Mozo, Gerina Piller, Jennifer Johnson and many others.

Hadwin Finding The Mark

There aren't a lot of Canadians on the PGA Tour although many Canadians are addicted to this wonderful game. So when a few Canadians with the last names Hearn, McQuillan, Hadwin start to make some waves on Tour we tend to follow them with eager anticipation. All are in the field this week trying to secure their playing privileges for next season. The more Canadians on Tour next year the better. So this week's McGladrey tournament will be fun to watch. Adam Hadwin is one golfer in particular you have to route for in trying to secure his PGA Tour card for next year he's only got a few tournaments left and results have only been positive.

Bob Weeks posted on his blog what Adam actually needs to do to secure his card, he went to the top (PGA Tour) and got the answer. Thanks Bob!

Once you find the look of a hybrid that fits your eye (for me Titleist 585H) your only going to improve your golf. Hitting a 3 or 4 hybrid is so much easier than hitting a 3 or 4 iron. Check out the video below of Miura Golf's new MG Hybrid. The new 20- and 23-degree hybrids bring Miura design expertise to your long game: aggressive flight, plenty of height, lands right. Love the look of these as well as the Aerotech Steel Fiber shaft.

Ottawa Area Weather is Great But Winter Is Inevitable

Golf lately here in the Ottawa area has been phenomenal it's been very dry with above average temperatures. The courses are in amazing condition most have had their greens/fairways punched  and are running smooth and fast. It's hard to imagine it's actually Fall. Usually around this time of the season golfers are looking at golf destinations South of the border where you can extend your season. For me lately it's been more about Career assessment workshops and finding a full-time job but a part of me is also thinking of swinging the club in the sunshine and making some Scottsdale tee times when there's snow falling outside. There's nothing like playing in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona or maybe Florida is more to your liking. This weather is not going to hold forever Winter is inevitable but we can hope it stretches out as long as possible and we are able to book a Winter golf getaway.

Cobra-Puma Fall Treats

Although I couldn't attend last weeks Cobra-Puma Event for Media at the Golf Town in Woodbridge. Rick Young from Score Golf was there and he's got a great read on Cobra-Puma. Be sure and read his article, you can catch up on on all the new releases this Fall from the retro Long Tom Driver to the Cobra ZL Encore driver. He also hints at another retro release this November. Stay tuned to Ottawa Golf Blog for an upcoming review of this exciting new Cobra-Puma release.

Rick also writes about the Cobra-Puma Canadian division and the signing of Long-hitting Canadian Tour player Matt Hoffman of Thornhill, Ontario. Hoffman is playing Cobra and wearing Puma these days. Good score for Cobra-Puma. We'll keep an eye on Hoffman big time.

Rickie Fowler Wins Korea Open Claims First Pro Win

Rickie Fowler finally gets that long awaited professional victory closing out his first win with a 3 under 68 Sunday at the OneAsia Tour's Korea Open.  Beating U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy by six-stroke must of been pretty sweet to as there were some other big names in the field. This victory will definitely built his confidence to overcome the mental side that has keep him off the win column Stateside.

Fowler finished at 16 under at Woo Jeong Hills and earned $249,864. He opened with rounds of 67 and 70 and shot a 63 on Saturday.

"It was a lot of fun," Fowler said. "I played well early on in the final round and then I was comfortable over the last few holes. Overall, I enjoyed the whole week.
"It feels great to have the first win. I played well all week, although I did have to hang in on Friday and post a score. But on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, I had good control of my ball, I drove well and I made some putts."

McIlroy finished with a 64. South Korea's Kim Meen-whee (71) was third at 10 under, and countryman Y.E. Yang (75) followed at 5 under.

Steve Jobs Impact On Me As A Golf Blogger

I don't really remember what life was like before I became acquainted with Steve Jobs and his wonderful gadgets. Becoming a member of the Cult of Mac seemed like an easy fit for a tech savvy geek like myself. Apple products have only enhanced my life as golf blogger. Jobs wonderful gadgets are a no-brainer for golfers. It's all about the apps and the camera when it comes to golf and Apple.

After running Ottawa Golf Blog for many years it seemed like a natural fit to start a blog about reviewing golf apps and so iPhone Golfer Apps was formed. From apps that help you with your putting and keeping score to apps that help you with the mental side of the game as well as with your swing. An iPhone is a great on the go training aid for any level of golfer. I continue to be amazed at the golf apps that continue to be developed. A golfer who is without a iPhone/iPod/iPad is certainly missing out on enhancing their skills and knowledge of the game.

The camera in a iPod or iPhone is an amazing tool that continually elevates my blogging potential. Taking pictures on the course is so easy with my iPod and the amount of apps that I can use to apply filters and enhance my golf course pictures is astounding. Uploading them to Instagram and Twitter to share with other golfers is a great way to connect and network with other like minded golfers.

Thank you Mr. Jobs you were one happening dude who touched many lives sent from my iPod.

One of my favorite quotes from Steve Jobs from Steve Jobs' 2005 Stanford Commencement Address:

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Can Kevin Na Learn From His Mistakes?

Sometimes it's hard to route for Kevin Na. He's one of the slowest players on Tour, his fidgety manners and general demeanor on the course comes across as arrogant and down right annoying. This guy has 28 top-10 finishes in his 131 career PGA Tour starts but has still yet to break through with a win. He enters the final round Sunday tied at 17 under with Nick Watney who has 4 Tour victories. Can Na learn from his many mistakes over the years. Remember the 16 he carded at the in the opening round of the 2011 Valero Texas Open on the par-4 9th hole at the AT&T Oaks Course. Can he close the deal Sunday. I say his head gets in the way again but maybe he'll prove me wrong.

Kevin Na finds trouble, cards a 16 in Round 1 of Valero Texas Open (2011)

Kentwool Golf Socks Continue To Impress

After doing an extensive Kentwool sock review early in the season I have continued to be impressed with Kentwool's golf socks. It has been one product that has continued to impress me from the first day I put a pair on my feet. I only wear Kentwool sock when i golf now and when I'm not golfing Kentwool socks get most of my miles as well.

On warm Summer days or now with the beginning of Fall golf, I love the feel of the wool on my feet. Do your self a favor and pick up a pair of Kentwool socks it's $20 well spent and your feet will thank you. Be sure and check out the KENTWOOL Tour Profile socks, which now have the logo visible on the ankle. Nice touch Kentwool.

Why Wear Wool: The Four Ws

Weather

Wool’s ability to absorb moisture from humid environments and redirect it to dryer areas makes it an ideal year-round fiber. Always keeping dry air next to skin, it creates a micro-climate for dry, odor-free feet in the summer and warmth and protection in colder months.

Wear

Superfine merino wool is lightweight, durable and requires minimal care while providing maximum comfort. Wool’s molecular makeup is like a spring, allowing it to stretch and snap back into shape far better than other leading materials.

Wicking

A natural performance fiber, wool takes up moisture in vapor form and redirects it keeping skin dry to the touch. Wool can absorb up to 30% its weight in moisture without feeling damp or clammy.

Wallet

Compared to other materials, the above benefits translate into a longer-lasting, higher-performing sock. By purchasing one pair of KENTWOOL socks, versus multiple pairs from other brands due to lesser quality, you put money back into your pocket.

About midway through the season I almost became a distributor here in the Ottawa area but the timing just wasn't right. Since my layoff from my full-time this September look for the possibility of Ottawa Golf Blog becoming a distributor early in 2012.
