Can An Amateur Win The Masters?

Yes and his name is Bryson DeChambeau

Here's the scoop. The best finish by an amateur at the Masters was by Charlie Coe in 1961, Coe rallied in the final round from six shots down to finish one stroke behind Gary Player. Coe having never turned pro has an impressive resume when it comes to the Masters.

Coe made 19 Masters Tournament appearances and owns almost every Masters amateur record.

Most cuts made (15)

Top 24 finishes (9)

Top 10 finishes (3)

Eagles (6)

Rounds played (67)

Most times low amateur (6)

Coe won low amateur honors at Augusta in four consecutive decades: 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s

He also holds the amateur records for best finish (2nd in 1961)

Lowes third round score (67 in 1959)

Lowest 72-hole score (281 in 1961)

I think this is the year an amateur will win the Masters and that amateur is Bryson DeChambeau. The reigning U.S. Amateur Champion has the game for winning and has already played 11 rounds at Augusta. In fact he's played a practise round with Ben Crenshaw this past Sunday I'm sure soaking in Ben's knowledge of Augusta. ***Jordan Spieth did the same thing before his win last year.

Jim Nantz told Golf Digest, “It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see this young man contend. ...Bryson is the one who has the capacity to utterly change golf.”

I like the way Bryson carries himself and I like the fact he's a student of the game plus he's a bit quirky (named his clubs).

Bryson DeChambeau comes in at $6500 on Draft Kings so he'll be a popular pick for most Fantasy Golf picks for the Masters plus any Masters Pools.

We'll have to see what transpires but why not make a little more history this week at Augusta.

Surprise Under Armour To Offer Line Of Golf Shoes

Well the so called secret is over, after two years Under Armour is finally set to release a line of golf shoes to the public. We've been drooling over Jordan Spieth's UA shoes for awhile now and we'll be able to purchase them April 4th/2016. I'm a little scared of the price point but having UA basketball shoes and running shoes. I know I quite like wearing UA shoes. So we'll see.

Under Armour's new golf shoe line features three styles. The UA Tempo Tour ($269.99 CDN) and UA Drive One ($239.99 CDN) are more athletic and performance based, while the UA Tempo Hybrid ($189.99 CDN) goes more for the casual and comfortable look and feel.

All Eyes On Austin This Week - 2016 Dell Match Play

It's so refreshing the PGA Tour takes a break this week (although there's a stroke play event in Peurto Rico) from the norm for a little match play. This is the second year for a different format but who doesn't like the intrigue and head to head golf that this week will showcase in Austin, Texas at the private Austin Country Club. The city of Austin has long been on my bucket list to visit not only for the golf but it's history, music, food and atmosphere. This week will only spur on my need to visit.

Harvey Penick (pictured), one of golfs greatest teachers, was born in Austin. Caddying by the time he was 8, he goes on to be the head pro at ACC (1923-73) and golf coach at UT (1931-63).

The Austin Country Club looks to be a very interesting test of golf for those playing this weeks Dell Match Play. The Austin Country Club was founded in 1899 and consists of an 18-hole Pete Dye design golf course.

The course facts from PGATour.com

COURSE: Austin Country Club, 7,073 yards, par 71. Founded in 1899, Austin CC is believed to be the oldest golf club in Texas, though it has relocated twice since the end of World War II. Its current site overlooking Lake Austin has been home since 1984, when Pete Dye completed a design featuring two markedly different nines. The front nine is on higher ground and typical of the surrounding Texas hill country, while the “lowlands” nine runs alongside Lake Austin and should provide a spectacular backdrop for finishing matches. The WGC Dell Match Play is the first TOUR-related event in Austin since a PGA TOUR Champions stop from 2003-09. The city also was the original site of the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge from 1978-94

After filling out my bracket I got Rory Vs. Rickie in final (Rickie wins)and Charley Hoffman Vs. Phil Mickelson (Hoffman wins) in the consolation match. who do you have?

State of Golf Gets Thumbs Up For The Week

Look no further than a few days ago at Ernie Els' Charity Event of the popularity of golf. Several PGA Tour Pros as well a whole lots of spectators were witness to Rickie Fowler making a brilliant hole-in-one on the 19th hole of the Old Palm Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Not only does Fowler jar a wedge (borrowed from Luke Donald) from 113 yds. but he wins $1 million for the Els for Autism Fund.

Rickie's shot is met with obvious exuberance from host Ernie Els but also other pros like Louis Oosthuizen and Rory McIlroy.

Golf is a game played all over the World. Look at the sorority of players that were at Ernie's event. The likes of Jack Nicklaus, Adam Scott, Charl Schwartzel, Keegan Bradley, Louis Oosthuizen, Luke Donald, Nick Price, Retief Goosen and, of course, Els himself.

Golf is becoming more and more popular. There are video games, PC games and free online versions of Golf. Online casinos, such as SlotsHeaven offer online slots themed golf games, where you can play for free and even make some money if you'd like to.

Sure some people think kids only want to play online video games against Tiger Woods but many just want to hit shots like Rickie Fowler. Guys like Rickie are good and they're growing the game.

Early last week Tiger Woods who's back practicing his short irons/games was opening up a new golf course outside of Houston, Texas. Called The Playgrounds – a 10-hole loop of par-3 holes that range from 53 to 102 yards in length. A golf course perfect for kids.

A huge crowd was on hand for the opening of the Playgrounds, which included a plethora of golf crazed kids drooling at the chance to play this golf course.

One of those kids, 11-year-old Taylor Crozier, who was announced to the crowd as having "perfect attendance in school this year – until today." Taylor steps up to the first tee to hit the first shot on the new course and sinks it for a remarkable ace – and it happened with Tiger Woods standing right there.

The crowd goes wild at witnessing this amazing shot under some special circumstances. Tiger gives Taylor a good old bear hug and no one seemed happier than Tiger for the kid's special shot on this opening day of the Playgrounds. I'm sure Taylor was thinking this is far better than golfing against Tiger Woods head to head on a video game like EA Sports PGA Tour golf.

St. Patrick's Day Shenanigans - Callaway MD3 Milled Lucky Clover Wedges

I don't even need a wedge but this beauty from Callaway Golf is stunning. I may have to pick one up just to complement my golf bag and Irish heritage out on the course.

The MD3 Milled Lucky Clover Wedges feature a limited edition True Temper Tour Issue Black Onyx Shaft, a custom black and green Lamkin UTX Grip, and a lucky clover lasered on the head. These are sharp looking wedges and at $140 may be in many a golfers bag come the March 17th release date.

The S-Grind is great for a wide range of conditions (normal, soft or firm), shot types, and swings (moderate to sweeping attack angles).

Confessions Of A Golf Blogger - Driver or Putter What's Your Poison?

Everyone loves to hit the long ball. Nothing like splitting the fairway with that perfect drive. Most of the time we can be fixated on getting those extra yards to the point we "need" that new driver. The latest and greatest from Golf Digest's Hot List or the local Golf Show. We do our research and come home with what we think is our holy grail driver. Most of the time the lustre wears off after awhile and the cycle once again continues. Sound familiar, I have to admit I've been there.

For some the "putter" or putting can be somewhat the same scenario as the driver. I feel more golfers should concentrate a little more practise putting then smashing their driver at the range. For me putting is so important and has become mostly about feel since I got serious about golf. It's also been the most consistent part of my game, mainly to do with being introduced to SeeMore Putters and their RST technology a few years back. I also like putting gadgets like David Keller's "Train Your Aim" putting aid. Concentrating on your putter and putting will do most a world of good.

Look at Bubba Watson a few weeks ago at the Northern Trust Open. Bubba noted for his long ball, won that tournament because of his putting. He even spoke of the importance of making putts at Riviera.

Remember Bubba's 10-footer for par on No. 10 to stay in the hunt in the final round or his pair of birdies to twice tie for the lead, from 30 feet on No. 11 and from 5 feet on the par-3 16th. He ended up the week at 1.316 Strokes gained putting.

The same can be said for Adam Scott the last few weeks. His putting has made the difference in turning out two wins back to back no less.

  • Scott ended up 17th in strokes-gained putting and 10th in putts per GIR.
While golf is definitely not one dimensional I feel many golfers neglect their putting.

For me more emphasis should be place on your putter and putting. So why not get some insight from David Keller maker of the Train Your Aim putting aid.

1) With so many golf aids out there why did you choose a putting aid?
A golfer probably uses his putter more than any other club in the bag. A putt can be a make or break shot for the whole round. If you miss a short putt it can be more aggravating/frustrating than any other shot. Therefore, if you improve your putting you reduce the number of shots during the round, you feel better mentally and it takes pressure off the rest of your game.

You never see a pro punch the air after hitting a drive or an iron to the green. Make a putt and they are jumping for joy!

I personally have been a very good ball striker and a scratch golfer. My putting has let me down over the years. Pushing, pulling and decelerating on a putt. Hitting a ball into the trees or rough can be recovered with the next shot. A missed two footer cannot be recovered and usually has a negative effect.. Flip that on the head, a drive into the rough or trees, scrambling onto the green and then sinking a putt for par can turn your whole game around. I don’t find the lines that are at the back of the putter very helpful. The reason I came up with the idea of an arrow was to be able to visualize an indicator pointing at the target.

If you listen to the pros they all say putting is crucial to a good round and winning a tournament. Tiger would miss fairways and greens but make up for it by being a fantastic putter.

I have played golf with many golfers who complain they scored a double or triple bogey. They consistently three putt, but they see the long shots as the problem. I always say, if you reduced your three putts you could save so many shots per round! Sometimes it clicks!

2) What has the feedback been from both amateur golfers and pros?

The feedback has been fantastic for Train Your Aim. Touring pros, PGA Tour winners, Top 100 golf instructors and the weekend golfer have loved it. It is simplicity itself and that is what golf needs.

We have received tremendous feedback from instructors who teach youngsters. Watch a junior/beginner put a putter behind the ball and see how they have the face open or closed by some margin. Clip Train Your Aim onto the putter shaft and see how they now understand that the arrow and, therefore, the face of the club points towards the hole or target line.

Nothing is better than receiving great feedback.

3) Do you see the Train Your Aim aid evolving at all?

Train Your Aim has evolved with adding a second pointer on to the clip. This allows the golfer to frame the ball with two arrows. The player and/or teacher can easily see the path of the club through the putting stroke.

Train Your Aim can be used for aligning any club face from putter, wedges, irons and woods. It attached to all clubs and helps all levels of golfer.

If your clubface is not square at address it is even less likely to square at impact.

4) Do you have any crazy stories of a golfer using your device and vastly improving their putting?

Train Your Aim began as a pointer system. It became clear that it actually helped with the putting stroke, keeping the players head down and following through to the target. Therefore, Train Your Aim actually reduces deceleration and the yips. It creates a smoother putting stroke for all golfers.

I sent a training aid to a friend of mine who was on the European Tour for many years and and now plays on the European Senior Tour. He received Train Your Aim during the week of the tournament. He sent me a few photos of him using it on the practice green and went on to win the tournament! I’m not sure it helped him win, but it’s a fun story.
