It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like A Retro Christmas

For most golf lovers at Christmas anticipation waits for one of those fancy new golf clubs under the tree or a new golf bag to compliment your golf clubs. Many are excited at getting a few dozen golf balls to supplement the ones they lost the season before (please note Ottawa Golf Blog family). For those of us crazy about golf, Christmas is a easy time to buy for those of us fanatical about getting that little white ball in that small little hole.

For those looking for that retro throwback golf gift you might want to get a gift certificate for the new year for your golf fanatic when Cleveland will release the Cleveland Classic Driver. When Ottawa Golf Blog first saw Cleveland Staffer Keegan Bradley using one recently he immediately fell in love with it's classic retro look hearkening back to the days of Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. The Classic is made with what most golf drivers are being used with these days, titanium. It's the club's old-school look that will get most golfers drooling. The Classic Driver has the look of an old persimmon wood but with some serious modern feel. It will have a 460cc club head with what looks like an incredibly deep face.  The dark mahogany and gold finish is one classic look definitely a must try for the new year.

What Will The Future Hold For The 2012 Season

Who doesn't like to speculate about the upcoming 2012 PGA Tour and European Tour Season. Figuring out who might break through with a major victory or who might put together a season like Webb Simpson had this past season with 2 victories can always be fun to wager on. What about predicting Bill Haas winning the FedEx Cup who could of seen that coming. Golf Betting future action on if Tiger Woods will win a Major in 2012 has to be a popular bet for next year. Seeing him win the Chevron Challenge was important but can he win another Major, maybe the Masters and another green jacket. Action on how many majors Rory McIlroy will win next season will be popular as well. The young guns are on the heals of many of the vets for Major honors. Who do you think might surprise us this season?

2011 Trusty Rusty Wedge Review

Before the snow and colder weather arrived here in the Ottawa area I had the chance to test out the new Trusty Rusty Wedge from Cobra-Puma Golf now available from Golf Town for $129.99.

2011 Cobra-Puma Trusty Rusty Wedge Review
Pros
  • The black PVD finish is amazing looking . It frames the ball beautifully. Can't wait til I use it more so I can get that true "Rusty" feel.
  • I like the fact The True Temper Dynamic Gold S200 shaft has been painted black w/ a non-glare coating and precision laser engraving - A great look.
  • Love the longer length in the Lamkin 3GEN® Grip. A must for gripping down on those finesse shots.A real solid grip that absorbs any vibrations, the orange accents are awesome as well.
  • Versatility - The wedge performed great on full, three quarter and half shots
  • At a price of $129.99 at Golf Town this wedge stands up to all of it's competitors in this price range including my Scratch wedges.
  • With a vast array of lofts (men’s right handed lofts of 49°, 51°, 53°, 55°, 57°, 59° and 61° with a  Left-handed lofts of 51°, 53°, 55°, 59° and 61° ) there's something for everyone.
Cons
  • Because of the versatility of the wedge with the Tri-Bounce Sole more practice might be needed on those  long, medium and short/flop shot

Here's the scoop on these wedges from Cobra Golf:

COBRA Trusty Rusty Wedges Technology

The COBRA Trusty Rusty Wedges are made with 100% raw, unplated 8620 carbon steel that will rust over time. The Tri-Bounce Sole with rear scallop provides enough bounce for forgiveness but keeps the leading edge height low so golfers can get underneath the ball. The Lamkin 3GEN® Grip has improved vibration damping, stays soft and tacky in all playing conditions and does not absorb moisture. A longer length with less taper allows for consistent feel when golfers need to choke down on close shots.
• Tri-Bounce Sole with Rear Scallop

• Higher bounce in the center with relief in the heel and toe optimizes performance for long, medium and short/flop shots Laser Precision Technology

• Patent-pending aggressive machined grooves with post-laser milling. Features four distinct surface roughnesses that result in maximum allowable spin Specialty Rusted Finishes

• Promotes maximum allowable spin and enhanced feel with non-plated finishes that rust over time.
The Trusty Rusty Wedges (MSRP $129) are available in men’s right handed lofts of 49°, 51°, 53°, 55°, 57°, 59° and 61° with a True Temper Dynamic Gold S200 shaft. Left-handed lofts of 51°, 53°, 55°, 59° and 61° are available as well.

The Trusty Rusty will be available at retail December 9th, 2011.

The Inevitable - Looks Like Rickie Fowler Will Sign with Cobra Golf - Video

Talk has been extensive about Rickie Fowler switching to Cobra golf clubs after this year is over and many conversation across various Golf Forums like GolfWrx.com TorontoGolfNuts.com SandTrap.com have talked to people in the  know and say it's a done deal. I haven't asked my contacts at Cobra but I definitely knew something was up when I received the new Trusty Rusty with it's great orange accents and orange Lamkin 3Gen grip.

Check out the following video from a recent Cobra Rep Meeting especially at 3:30 of the video. Thoughts!

Rickie Fowler Graces Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13

A great little write up from Kotaku.com about the upcoming Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 Release. Nice to see Rickie Fowler win the competition to be included on the cover but will I fork out the $$$ after getting last years TW PGA Tour 12.

Calamity Jane, the fabled putter of the Augusta National co-founder Bobby Jones, graces the cover of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13's special edition, along with the club's signature Green Jacket. Oh yeah, some decent golfers also share the packshot of the main product on PS3 and Xbox 360.

For the third time* in as many years, Woods shares the cover of a game with his name on it. In the United States/NTSC regions, Woods is paired with American golfer Rickie Fowler. In Europe/PAL, he shares the cover with 2011 U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy of the U.K. Fowler and McIlroy were chosen for the cover by a fan-voted playoff earlier this year.

But it's the nod to history that wins me over here. Jones had two putters named Calamity Jane. The first he retired from service in 1926, after it survived a fire that consumed the rest of his clubs in 1925. It is on display at Augusta. The second is the one he used to win golf's original Grand Slam (the Open and Amateur championships in the U.S. and U.K.) in 1930.

"It is the worst putter I have ever held in my hands," said the golf writer Charles Price. "If a pro left it in a barrel of clubs in his shop at a dollar apiece, nobody would buy it." Jones won 13 major tournaments (as then classified) with the two putters; the second one was modeled to reflect the first, imperfections and all. Because of the ties to Augusta, we can assume the first Calamity Jane is the one depicted on the cover of the video game.
