Sligo Wear's Designs Tell A Story

We did a review of Sligo Wear last year and were really impressed with their extensive line of apparel. Sligo Wear is now in stores at Golf Town so be sure and check it out. If you're like me and you need a visual presentation of  Sligo's styles/colors. On their website they put together some color stories of their Spring 2011 line that will help you to figure out what color combinations work and don't work. If you can't find a combo you like I fear you may need a golf apparel intervention. Below are two of my favorite color stories: Haze and Orange. Check out more here.

Be sure and head over to Brian Gay's Facebook page as he wants fans to vote what Sligo pants he'll wear during Friday's round at Harbour Town Golf Links. Sticking with the Heritage style you can choose from four styles of plaid pants. Four styles to choose from: Vegas Plaid, Sligo Plaid, Platinum Plaid or Citrus Plaid.

To vote, you’ll need to visit Gay’s Facebook page (click here).

Who will wear the plaid jacket this year?

Yes the plaid jacket you get when you win the Heritage isn't as prestigious as winning the green one from Augusta but it's still pretty cool and steep with prestige and history as well. I like Rickie Fowler this week to win the Heritage and don the plaid jacket. Rickie's Sunday orange should clash just nicely with the plaid but who cares he'll have won his first tournament and become a piece of history.

From Lauren Deason, PGATOUR.COM Editorial Coordinator

Charles Fraser, the founder of Sea Pines (where the Harbour Town Golf Links course is located), discovered a little known fact. It turned out that Harleston's Green in Charleston, S.C., may have been the first place golf was played on American soil.
A ship's manifest from 1786 referenced "golfer sticks" and "featheries" (also known as golf balls), items that apparently traveled to South Carolina and Georgia.
Because of his findings, Fraser decided to build the Verizon Heritage's tournament traditions around Scottish ones. Even the name itself -- bestowed upon the tournament 40 years ago before Arnold Palmer became the first Heritage Classic champion -- reflects the state's golf "heritage".

Nothing like hitting a golf shot in unison with the firing of a muzzle-loader cannon. That's what defending champion, Jim Furyk got to do on Monday at the Heritage.  Using a hickory club he feathered a shot out into Calibogue Sound.

The Timeless Swing Review

Reading “The Timeless Swing” was like having Tom Watson in your back pocket when your playing golf. What better person to help a hacker out especially at the beginning of the golf season then Tom Watson.

Nothing much has changed with Tom Watson simple golf swing since his Major wins, hell he almost won the 2009 Open Championship if not for a bad bounce. Everyone regardless of their golf ability can learn something from his book “The Timeless Swing”.

One of the great things about this book was Dom Furore’s fantastic color photos. Having larger detailed pictures of what Tom Watson is trying to convey in each of his lessons was perfect. There’s one thing to talk about a certain swing mechanic or tip but to have great pictures to go along with it is a big help for those that need a more visual presentation.

Tom along with Nick Seitz uses short, informative and easy to understand lessons for each area Tom feels is important to your swing and fundamentals. I found each chapter was just the right length not getting overly technical. Sometimes to much info can be a little overwhelming when it comes to the golf swing.

A nice bonus in the book is the enhanced videos for Smartphone users. For those wanting more visual presentation of certain elements Watson is trying to get across download the app then point your Smartphone’s camera at the Microsoft tag on the page to see the video. Great stuff!

My favorite chapters in the book:

Chapter 2 Pre-Swing Basics -These are always a good refresher when your swing gets a little off.

Chapter 6 Drills For A Better Swing -When you can’t get out and play these drills will make your next round more enjoyable.

Visually speaking Chapter 7 is great as well with a series of four views of Tom Watson’s “Timeless Swing”. Up The Line, Down The Line, Face On,  and From Behind.

The book retails for $34.99 CDN and can be found at many retailers including Amazon.ca and Chapters. It can also be purchased through eBook. I suggest picking it up you’ll end up saving that amount in golf balls guaranteed.

Cobra White S3 Driver Set For May Release

First Cobra Golf introduced the Limited Edition White ZL Driver and Ian Poulter won with it now there's another white driver set for a limited release. In May they'll release the Cobra White S3 Driver. I like the fact they 'll offer an upgraded premium Aldila RIP all-white shaft with the white head.

This past week, it was in the bag for Cobra-PUMA Golf's Johan Edfors at the Maybank Malaysian Open on the European Tour.

The Cobra White S3 Driver (MSRP $399 CDN) is available in lofts of 9.5° and 10.5° in men’s right-handed, and 9.5° in men’s left-handed, with an Aldila RIP Beta shaft – the 9.5° model comes in S flex only, the 10.5° in choice of S or R flex – with a white-colored Golf Pride Tour Wrap 2G grip. This special release also includes a unique white headcover, plus a white AFT torque wrench in a white pouch. Thanks Cobra this will be right around the time my current driver will lose it's magic.

Asher Gloves Bird is the Word

Asher Glove Review

Asher Golf makes golf gloves with character. These aren’t your boring Footjoy gloves. With names like Death Grip, Birdy, Eye Candy and One Glove you have to have some flair to wear these golf gloves. I haven’t worn a golf glove in about four or five years but I figured if I’m going to try to wear a glove again then Asher fits my style. I decided to place an order after a few emails back and forth with owner James Roundy. Large was the size I placed but some of the Asher styles fit smaller so be careful when ordering.

Created with flickr slideshow from softsea.

Here’s what I ordered, from the company:

The Original Red Birdy
• Premium Pearl Gray Cabretta Leather
• Ultra-Thin and Tacky for Elite Performance
• Classic Tour Style Cut

Cooltech Birdy
† New Cooltech™ Premium Synthetic Leather
† Super-Tacky Cabretta-Leather Reinforcements
† Stretch-Fit Lycra® Finger Inserts

The Original Red Birdy I got in an XL and fit like your standard leather golf glove. Loved the red birdy and Asher accents subtle yet stylish. The Red Birdy held up pretty good for a leather glove but I would definitely go with a few tips that Asher Golf recommends:

  • After finishing your phenomenal round, please don’t just wad your glove up and stuff it in your bag. Show your glove some love! Place it in a smooth, clean surface and let it dry. To keep it extra fresh, store it in the packaging between rounds.
  • To maximize your gloves’ life and get the most bang for your buck buy two or three Asher gloves and rotate them every second or third hole as you play.

For those purists out there the Original is all you need to flip the bird when you take there money during match play.

The Cooltech Birdy I liked a lot better. The synthetic leather seemed to breath better than the regular leather. Making the round of golf or practicing more enjoyable. I went with an XXL in the Cooltech Birdy as it fits a bit small. Asher suggests you choose one size larger than you would normally wear. For example, if you typically wear a size L, select size XL. The black Cabretta leather reinforcements that were strategically placed on the palm of the glove made the glove seem extra tacky. Nice touch as well with the birdy ball marker.

I highly suggest trying out one of the styles of gloves from Asher Golf. I like the fact they have something for the golf purist as well as the flashy extrovert golfer. They held up great during testing. Asher Golf knows cool golf gloves so if you have any questions please contact James or any other representative of the company. Their gloves can be purchase on their newly designed website as well as from numerous online retailers. Gloves ranges in price from $17.95 to $23.00 USD and a few are also on sale. Be sure to follow them on Twitter and Facebook.

Psycho Bunny sighted in Texas

Easter is still a week away but a bunny is making some waves in San Antonio Texas. Cameron Tringale who wears Psycho Bunny polo shirts  is making birdies and an eagle to vault his way up the Valero Texas Open leadboard.

David Feherty pointed out on the CBS feed about the Psycho Bunny on Cameron's shirt. New York designers Robert Godley and Robert Goldman should be happy with the exposure/traffic from all the talk  today and Tringale's excellent play. Should be fun to see how the bunny holds up tomorrow when the wind looks to pick up for the final round.

Before this week I'd never heard of the apparel company Psycho Bunny. Then through a link on Twitter I began to follow them. I suggest you do the same. Cameron is wearing the Psycho Bunny Polo Shirt in Bubblegum.

Take the Golfers bowling, take them bowling

What do pro golfers do when there's a rain delay at a tournament. Apparently at the Malaysian Open you bowl.  Rory McIlroy, World #1 Martin Kaymer, Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and Open champion Louis Oosthuizen decided a ten-pin bowling match was just the right thing to do to stay loose during the rain break. Having a bowling alley in the clubhouse is pretty cool. Who do think has better form here? Sorry Martin Rory's #1 and he's leading the tournament. Way to shake off the Masters hangover Rory.

Kentwool Tour Sock Review: Kentwool Delivers On Promise

Kentwool Tour Sock Review

Bubba Watson was raving about them on Twitter. Fellow bloggers were writing about their virtues online. Kentwool apparently makes  “The World’s Best Golf Socks”. At $19.95 for a pair I was needless to say curious. After a few tweets my Social Media friends hooked me up with two pairs of Kentwool socks.  How would they fair up here in Canada. So were these as good as everyone was saying and are they really worth $19.95 pair. Read on for my review of the Men's Tour Profile and Kentwool Low Profile socks.

From the Company
Kentwool Tour was started by Mark Kent in by asking ‘why doesn’t anyone make a great golf sock?’ The company was started largely in part to Mark’s own desire to have a comfortable golf sock after having some on course issues of his own with other socks. In late 2008 the first Kentwool Sock was made and the journey of ‘the world’s best golf sock’ was underway. The claims?
* Optimizes performance
* Provides superior comfort
* Enables muscles to stay at peak conditions for long durations
* Reduces fatigue and friction-increasing circulation and preventing abrasions

Key Features, Technology & Functionality
The innovative design has a proprietary blend of super fine merino wool yarn-WINDspun by KENTWOOL- and other premium natural & high-tech fibers. The integrated foot technology system includes a micro-climate feature which reduces abrasion and muscle fatigue. Also included is:
* Moisture management and wicking properties
* Enhanced cushioning at strategic micro-stress points along the foot
* Innovatively engineered heel, toe, and bridge elements designed with advanced reinforcement-providing maximum support and protection against injury.

At Home w/ kids
For March I wore my Kentwool socks exclusively inside.  When you think of wool socks you think bulky. Kentwool socks are super lightweight and thin compared to the lumberjack wool socks most people wear in the Winter here in Canada.  After awhile I wasn’t even wearing them in my Crocs which I use as slippers during the Winter. Thank you Kentwool my feet were toasty warm and dry thanks to your blend of super fine merino wool yarn.

To The Golf Course
This isn’t your regular golf sock. Kentwool have obviously listen to golfers and what they like and dislike. Now that the weather is better I got the chance to test out the Kentwool socks at the practice range and course. The comfort, feel, and durability was outstanding testing them out with my various golf shoes (Kikkor Eppik Blaze, ECCO Golf Street, PUMA Cell Fusion). The socks are cushioned with strategically place padding along your toes, heel and arch support. Even with all this wool and padding Kentwool has managed to keep their socks thin but strong. After many washes they still retain all their great properties. For those that have feet that over heat and sweat the top of the Kentwool sock is breathable to keep your feet dry and comfy.

Conclusion
From years of tree planting in B.C. I did some damage to my feet so I’m quite careful what shoes and socks I wear on my feet. Kentwool guarantees that you'll never get a blister wearing their socks. I’m proud to say wearing them by themselves as well as with my various golf shoes (Puma, Kikkor, ECCO) I have had no blisters, no slippage, no pressure points whatsoever.

Are they the best sock I've ever worn? Yes.  The toughest thing to get over is the price. $19.95 for a single pair is a lot to ask when you can get alternatives for half that price. If you walk the course and your budget allows your feet deserve to be pampered by these socks. They are as good as everyone says. Time to treat your feet to some comfy socks. Buy them online at Kentwool's Online Store.

Hackers Rejoice Kevin Na Cards 16 On a Par 4

If you missed it from yesterday Kevin Na carded a 16 on a par 4 during the opening round of the Valero Texas Open. He was miked for play by the Golf Channel which seemed like a way for viewers to become even more bored as Na is noted for being a meticulous player (ie. slow). Boy Na was not slow here as he seemed to exercise his demons and endlessly whack the ball out of the Texas bush. For all those hackers out there have look and smile. Great golf entertainment.

FILA Golf Apparel Review

FILA Golf Apparel Review
Receiving new golf apparel in the mail is fun especially when your a golf apparel junkie like myself. My wife complains I have more clothes then her and even more space to put all the clothes. I must admit I am spoiled. Getting apparel to review from a company is great fun. An apparel  brand I’ve never worn before creates even more excitement. I had heard of the FILA brand before I only recently discovered they make golf apparel. Upon seeing their online 2011 catalog I was more then impressed with the range of apparel they have for both men and women.

The Birmingham Polo (Heritage Blue) and the Dallas Sport Shirt (White) are both from the 2011 FILA Golf Collection. Both items were great for this time of the year when it is cool and your trying to get the kinks out of your swing on the range from a long Canadian winter.

FILA Golf Review: Birmingham Polo (Heritage Blue)
I’m not a real big fan of solid blue polos even if they are a color called Heritage Blue. So at first glance the Birmingham Polo looked like your run of the mill golf polo. After feeling the material and actually wearing the polo I knew FILA Golf had done their homework when it comes to golfers. The combination of fabrics and the texture of the shirt make the diamond patterned Birmingham very comfortable to wear  (The body of the polo is constructed of 97% Polyester and 3% Spandex and the panels 92% recycled polyester and 8% Lycra). Practicing in my backyard or at the range, the Birmingham Polo held up great for my early season swings.

I don’t know about you but when I golf I sweat so it’s great to see FILA Golf using fabric that is both moisture wicking and anti-bacterial. Who wants to smell when your having a pint with buddies after a round or closing an advertising deal with a client on the golf course.

I usually wear an XL in shirts and the Birmingham Polo fit true to size with amble room for the Dallas Sport Shirt underneath. I had no problem coordinating the Birmingham pol with the vast array of golf pants I had in the closet. Generally I wore a lighter colored pair of pants with the Birmingham. Check out FILA Golf catalog for plenty of pants and short combos for this polo and many others.

The Birmingham Polo comes in three colors: Black, Pine, and Heritage Blue. Sizes run from XS-3XL. MSRP $80

FILA Golf Review: Dallas Sport Shirt

This shirt I found to be just plain fun to wear and multi functional. It’s basically a layering shirt that fits fairly snug to the body. The combination of 86% polyester and 14% spandex makes the Dallas Sport Shirt incredibly soft and comfortable to wear. It’s like a second skin that keeps you warm and that’s important this time of the year. I wore it by itself, underneath a Sunice pullover as well as underneath various golf shirts.

I found the fit of the Dallas Sport Short in XL perfect. When playing and practicing it was perfect for keeping me warm and cozy for those cool and windy days. On the weekend practicing with my kids at a local course I wore the Dallas Sport Shirt under my MasterSaxon tee for practicing. Looked great plus it kept my aging muscles warm and loose.

The Dallas Sport Shirt comes in three colors: Black, White, and Silver. Sizes run from XS-3XL. MSRP $80

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My first experience with Fila Golf apparel was great. Really liked the way the two pieces felt and that had everything to do with FILA’s combination of fabrics. Loved the multifunctional Dallas Sport Shirt great for Canadian golfers in the Spring and the Fall. I wasn’t crazy about the color of the Birmingham polo initially but it did start to grow on me. With such a huge amount of colors and selection in their 2011 catalog most people will find a color combination of their liking when it comes to FILA apparel. Check out the 2011 catalog for the various plaids for men and women a great combination with some of FILA’s solid colors.

I also like the fact FILA Golf realizes golfers all aren’t the same shape. Kudos for having their apparel in sizes running from XS-3XL.  Another great thing about FILA Golf is the fact you can dress head to toe in FILA apparel, one stop shopping I like to call it. I only received two pieces to review so be sure to view their entire line for 2011 it’s extensive. If you can't find something you like then you have a serious golf fashion issue.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A week ago Stacy Lewis won the Kraft Nabisco Championship in an emotional victory over World No. 1 Yani Tseng and other top women golfers in the World. Stacy was very stylish in her victory wearing FILA Golf’s Athena Polo and Calgary Bermuda Shorts during the final round. .  Upon reading more about Stacy I couldn't believe how great of a role model she is for young girls with scoliosis (both my girls have scoliosis). Stacy's story is very inspirational. She proves that you can live a normal and successful life. She's a great spokesperson for FILA Golf. She also now has 5 more fans!

“Stacy’s unyielding competitive drive aligns perfectly with Fila Golf’s mission to design and manufacture top-of-the-line golf apparel,” says Nancy Robitaille, Fila Golf principal designer.  “Not only did Stacy look stylish on the course, but she performed her best despite numerous obstacles to achieve her dream. As we celebrate the centennial of the Fila brand, we are thrilled about Stacy’s accomplishments on and off the course.”

Schwartzel and Scott The Long and The Short

I'm nursing a Masters hangover. What a great Masters from a fans stand point. So much intrigue, excitement, and angst. Fun to watch the pros fight it out for the green jacket. Charl Schwartzel was impressive with birdies at the last four holes to seal the victory over Adam Scott and Jason Day. Charl's putter of choice, a prototype Nike Method 004. This Method putter doesn't have the signature Polymetal Groove Technology. Also check out the Ping grip a la Tiger Woods.

On the back 9 I was really pulling for Adam Scott to win and become the first Australian to win the Masters. He gave it a great shot but came up short. I do find it odd to see Adam Scott using an unconventional putter but lately it seems to be working for him. Scott was welding the Scotty Cameron Studio Select Kombi with a broom handle shaft. Maybe he can win this week's Valero Texas Open. **Note to ScottyCameron.com you might want to update Adam Scott bio.

Mize Memories, Mashie and Amen Corner

Hometown boy Larry Mize won the Masters in 1987 with an incredible chip to beat Seve Ballesteros & Greg Norman in a playoff. Check out his scorecard today as he mashed his way around Augusta National.

Larry Mize. 6 pars, 5 bogeys, 1 double, 6 birdies = 73
5 over on 4 straight holes on front; 4 under on 4 straight on back (Praise Amen Corner!)

Mize has an 18 degree Cleveland Mashie hybrid in his bag which is getting rave reviews on various golf forums. It's definitely on my list to audition for my bag this year. If it can help a 52 year old Masters Champ then why not a 43 year old hacker like me.

So who else finds it unbelievable that so far Larry Mize is better than World #1 Martin Kaymer this week? Kaymer is trailing the '87 Champ by five strokes going into tomorrow's second round.

WITB for Larry Mize at the Masters from The Hackers Paradise.

Fila Golf's Stacy Lewis Wins An Emotional Major

Watching Stacy Lewis's victory yesterday was amazing to watch as she surged ahead of World #1 Yani Tseng in some windy conditions to post a 69 and a three shot victory. She's an amazing athlete who I didn't realize has scoliosis. My girls(7 & 10) have scoliosis, so it was cool to show them her win yesterday on TV. Congrats Stacy be very proud. Stay tuned for a Fila Golf apparel review real soon.

Press Release

Fila Golf’s Stacy Lewis Victorious at Emotional Kraft Nabisco Championship
First-Time LPGA Tour and Major Winner Showcases Luxury Sportswear Collection
(MONTREAL) – Fila Golf sponsored player Stacy Lewis won the Kraft Nabisco Championship – her first LPGA Tour victory and a “major” tournament nonetheless – competing in apparel from the sport brand’s 2011 collection.
Fila Golf’s superior performance fabrics kept the 26-year-old cool, dry and comfortable at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. Specifically designed to enhance athleticism without hindering the body’s natural motion, Lewis wore Fila Golf’s Athena Polo and Calgary Bermuda Shorts while firing a final-round 69 to steal the lead from defending champion and World No. 1 Yani Tseng.
“I was proud of the way I hung in there and made some key putts, especially on 17,” says Lewis about her clutch 18-foot putt from the fringe.  “I know I can play with the best players in the world now.”
Culminating with a traditional victory leap into Poppie’s Pond, the win boosts Lewis inside the Top 20 in the Rolex World Golf Ranking and positions her for a spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup team
Adding to the drama of Lewis’ win, was the death of her grandfather during the Kraft Nabisco Championship Pro-Am last Wednesday.  Lewis is accustomed to overcoming adversity, having battled scoliosis since age 11 and playing with a metal rod and five screws in her back, she still reached All-American status while attending the University of Arkansas and earned SEC Golfer of the Year in 2008.
Crafted from Fila Golf’s premium, 100-percent cotton and eco-friendly recycled polyester, many pieces boast wrinkle-resistant, moisture wicking, quick-drying and antimicrobial properties.
In stock year-round for immediate order and program fulfillment, Fila Golf’s complete line of apparel retails from $20 for accessories to $140 for outerwear and is worn in competition by professionals around the world. The Fila brand, which has an exceptional history of innovative design, celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2011.

MasterSaxon Tee Show Your Spirit

With the Masters next week our friends at Dirty Saxon released a MasterSaxon Tee today. Axel one of the owners and designers  explains on the Dirty Saxon blog what exactly is a MasterSaxon tee?
Just a basic, good quality, soft t-shirt that has the spirit of the Masters in its color, but that you can wear anytime you want.

Also check out the DS blog as Axel talks about his experience at the Masters and gives his predictions for the winner this year. I've got a XL green headed to Canada.  They come in red as well. $20 well spent for Masters t-shirt. Get yours now for Masters week.

Recently I had the pleasure to ask Jenna and Axel from Dirty Saxon a few questions. Here's the scoop.

How did Dirty Saxon start out?
DS began in November 2009. Axel and I were sitting discussing golf apparel. It was not a serious idea to begin with, but the more we talked about it, the more exciting and plausible the idea became. As for the name, Axel was rooming with two other golfers - one from England and one from Scotland - and got into the habit of calling them "dirty saxons". They, in turn, would refer to him as "dirty gaucho" as he's from Buenos Aires, Argentina. When Axel and I were brainstorming, I threw out the suggestion of calling the brand DirtySaxon. We both agreed on the name and the logo. The British flag is a strong symbol that supports our premiere line of shirts which are modeled after courses on the British Open rotation. "Saxon" also ties heavily into the history and traditions of golf which are standards DS adheres to in our design.

Where do the design ideas come for your shirts?
Axel is the designer for DS. His inspirations range from his father's and grandfather's vintage soft polos with four-button plackets to the bright, bold colors and constant movement of Buenos Aires. As far as style icons: Payne Stewart & Jack Nicklaus and brands we relate to: Fairway & Greene, Nicklaus, and Peter Millar. Also, Axel takes a lot of his inspiration from the clothing of the late 70s and 80s in general.

What makes Dirty Saxon shirts different from all the other golf shirts out there?
Our combination of contemporary colors with vintage detail and fit. It takes confidence to wear a DS shirt and we hope that reflects on our consumers' character.

Any chance of seeing a player on the PGA Tour or maybe the Nationwide Tour decked out in Dirty Saxon?
No news yet - we have a couple of friends playing on the Hooters tour, but we're not to that point yet.

What are the plans for 2011 for Dirty Saxon?
To become more established. We're still getting our feel set and everything is a learning lesson! DS will release some t-shirts and, hopefully, some new designs for fall. We're just trying to remain focused on establishing ourselves, which is difficult as a start-up. In the future, we are hoping that we will have an opportunity to work with an investor(s) so that DS can expand into a full line.
