Clark Can't Close Tournament - Stricker Wins Colonial

It was very painful to watch as Tim Clark couldn't close the deal at Colonial yesterday. He's obviously kicking himself after missing a 7 footer that would have won the tournament on the first playoff hole but it shouldn't of even got to extra holes as Clark bogeyed the final two holes to stumbled into a playoff with Steve Stricker and Steve Marino. I thought for sure he was going to make it for his first tour win but he pulled it left and then it was off to the second playoff hole where he couldn't make his put for birdie and Stricker did. Some bad luck, some bad putts Clark is still searching for that first tour win.

"I have a lot of work to do when it comes to closing out golf tournaments," Clark said. "Bad break or not, the tournament should have ended on the first playoff hole. I didn't make a confident stroke and I pulled it."

$140 US Two Rounds At Disney World's Golf Courses

So now that I'm heading to Disney World the first week in September one of the first things I did was see if the PGA Tour was in Florida at the time I'm there (it isn't) and also look into the courses that are there at Disney World. From what I can tell you can get a pretty good deal for two rounds if your staying at one of the many resorts at Disney World. Bonus for me. The resort we're staying at looks like some of the many Las Vegas hotels you see online, very bright and a bit obnoxious but if I can play 2 of the following courses (Osprey Ridge, Lake Buena Vista, Palm and Magnolia) for $140 US I'll stay pretty much anywhere, now I just have to talk to wife into bringing my clubs. Stay tuned. Check online for the Unofficial Walt Disney World Golf Guide as a good guide and resource.

Canadian's Baryla and Fritsch In Contention In Raleigh

Nice to see two Canadian golfers in contention at this week's Nationwide Tour event in Raleigh, North Carolina. Chris Baryla from Vernon, BC (where I met my wife) shot a 63 and vaulted up the leaderboard he's just 3 shots off the lead. As well Brad Fritsch from Manotick, Ont. (down the road from where I live) shot a 67 and is just 4 shots off the lead. We'll be following their progress tomorrow as Brad hasn't made a cut yet in his two previous Nationwide Tour starts and this is the first Nationwide stop for Chirs this year. Let's go guys.

Going to Disney World

Well I was pleasantly surprised at work today with a phone call saying, "We're going to Disney World". It seems some travel deals are just to good to pass up and my generous Father-in-Law has booked my family a little Disney vacation for the beginning of September for one of my girl's birthday. Needless to say I'm still in a bit in shock. My wife and I went on our honeymoon to Disney's counterpart in California so we know what the happy place on earth feels like. Now we just get to show our 3 kids. Pretty lucky I wonder if I'll be able to bring my golf clubs.

Putting Fundamentals From My First Golf Lesson

Last week I had my first of three golf lessons focusing on the short game. Last week's lesson was putting which was quite fun because I got to learn from an instructor what the proper way to putt is, at least according to this instructor. I'd always just putted by feel and never thought about grip, posture, alignment. What a hacker right? So here's some fundamentals of what I learned now I can't wait to apply it my next round which looks like Monday.

  • Grip - The hands are the only part of the body touching the club, they have to be on the club in a position that keeps the putter face a square through impact.
  • Posture - Proper posture creates good body balance, so the body stays quiet while making the putting motion.
  • Aim and Alignment - A square stance and alignment will encourage a square impact and alignment will encourage an on line putting motion.
  • Ball Position - Placing the ball in the correct position in your stance is critical to arriving in the correct impact position.

Alvaro Quiros Slam Dunk Eagle

Alright I'll be the first to admit I've never had an eagle before and of course when watching the pros sometimes they make it look so easy with their free flowing unencumbered swings, hell they're the professionals right I'm just a hacker. Well watching the European Open on Day 1 I almost fell over my office furniture in my office checking out the coverage online. Alvaro Quiros hits this amazing shot for eagle on the 14th hole of the London Golf Club. Slam dunks it right in the hole no roll, no bounce straight in pretty amazing shot from Alvaro Quiros and he's shooting up the leaderboard today during the third round.

More Golfers Who Twitter - LPGA Bivens Says Hell Ya

Here's some more golfers who Twitter to add to your followers. LPGA commissioner Bivens is definitely encouraging players to participate.

"I'd love it if players Twittered during the middle of a round," Bivens said in an interview, according to Bloomberg News. "The new media is very important to the growth of golf and we view it as a positive, and a tool to be used."

Looking For Wedges

Who doesn't like getting a deal especially when it comes to golf clubs. Right now I'm looking for wedges, new ones to boot which is rather rare for me considering I trade for most of my clubs through golf forums. I do a lot of research online going through review after review because I don't have the time to demo these clubs at Golf Town and other places in the area. So this past week I've been searching looking for that Black Friday deal. One that I just can't turn down and is to good to be true. So far Golf Town has a great little deal going on til May 31st. Buy one Wilson Staff TW9 ($99) wedge get the second at half price. Now I haven't heard a lot about these wedges but just from a looks standpoint they look pretty nice in the gunmetal finish and there seems to be a host of loft options. My hunt continues for new wedges.

Puma Golf Invisbonding Polo Review

Puma Golf Invisbonding Polo Review

When it comes to choosing a polo shirt to wear for my weekly golf game I tend to pick one of my old favorites usually in a darker color. When Puma Golf sent me a couple of golf shirts, one white and one flame orange. These colors alone definitely took me out of my comfort zone but I'd never worn a Puma golf shirt before so I was eager to try them out for a review.

Technology
The one golf shirt was a white Golf Invisibonding Polo which at first glance looks like most lightweight golf shirts but Puma has done there homework and has made a golf shirt that takes into consideration the movements of a golfer. They've development a seamless fabric technology called "invisibonding" which has also been used in their soccer line.

Puma figured out how to join two pieces of material together using a "a light molecular bond". This invisibonding basically makes they're golf shirts seamless so when your out there beating around the ball there's no friction thus giving you increased movement in your swing.

The 100% polyester fabric is very light pretty much see through in the white fabric. With Puma's USP Technology, moisture is wicked away from your skin keeping you cool and dry in any weather conditions. The golf shirt also protects you from the suns UV rays.

Another cool thing about this golf shirt is the fact the fabric is Cyclofresh which basically locks unpleasant, sweaty smells in the textile and is laundered out the next time you wash it.

On The Course
Golfing with this shirt it almost seems like you have no golf shirt on it's so lightweight and breathable. I was almost afraid to wash it but it has held up great after 3 or 4 washes.

The seamless technology really seems to work as far as accenting the comfort during a golf game. The shirt never stuck to me and any moisture seemed to be wicked away from my skin. The collar never bothered me at all probably due to the solid rib knit collar and the fully taped neck seam.

The screened Puma and 18 Hole logo on the back of the golf shirt are a nice subtle touch as well as the Puma Cat embroidered on the front.

Conclusion
This polo has now become my go to golf shirt when it gets hot and humid up here in Ottawa. It so good at keeping you cool this is the one I grab when I'm playing a round in the heat. I've also realized as a golfer you can wear white and look good at least that's what my kids tell me. Puma has put a lot of great technology into this golf shirt and it shows.
The Puma Golf Invisibonding Polo comes in sizes ranging from XS to XXL. There are three colors available: black, flame orange and white. These type of golf shirts are also available in a women' s version.

You can pick up one of these at Golf Town for about $79.99. Father's Day is coming up and I'll bet your Dad doesn't have a cool golf shirt like this.

SeeMore FGP Stainless Steel Blade Putter Review - Conclusion

SeeMore FGP Stainless Putter Review
With Zach Johnson winning this past weekend, I figured it was time to finish my review of the SeeMore FGP Stainless Steel putter. After some early-season rounds, you can see my first impressions of the putter here.

You must love the SeeMore Putter Company for being the little guy in a sea of sizeable corporate golf companies. Pro golfers play SeeMore putters because they like them, not because they're getting paid to enjoy them.

You really can't mess with the facts about Zach Johnson winning with SeeMore's new FGP Stainless blade this past weekend:

Zach shoots an incredible 3d round 60 and then win a sudden death playoff on Sunday with a dramatic, 10-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole.

The 60 on Saturday means Zach now holds the last 2 scores of 60 or below shot on the PGA Tour, a stretch accounting for over 25,000 rounds of golf on tour. And he is the first person in the history of the PGA Tour to ever record 2 scores of 60 or better over an entire career, recorded with 2 different SeeMore putters.

So, will the SeeMore FGP Stainless Blade putter help a 20-handicap golfer? Read on.

Specs on the Putter reviewed:
Loft- 3.5 degrees
Lie- 70 degrees

Length- 35"

Finish: Black Satin
Center Shaft
Look and Feel
The look of the FGP blade putter in a black satin finish is beautiful. I loved how it framed the ball. When you align the putter using the RifleScope Technology, you feel like you will make more putts; the look
instills confidence. I've always loved the look of a dark finish on putters, and I think SeeMore is a real winner with this finish. It has so far held up well after some early season rounds and less-than-predictable Canadian weather.

The head cover for the FGP is unique; I've never seen anything like it. SeeMore's great idea of locking onto the shaft means you never have to worry about losing it.

The milled head of the putter is soft when you strike it in the center of the blade, probably due to the Cast 303 Stainless Steel that has had 4 milling processes applied to it.
A well-struck ball gives immediate feedback that you've hit a good putt. I just had a real problem with distance control, mainly with longer putts (see below)

Performance
The first time I used this putter, I had 5 one putts in a row. These were all on putts about 20 feet and shorter. This, unfortunately, didn't continue. I found the FGP to be pretty good on shorter putts in the 10-15 ft. range, and where FGP excelled were those tricky short putts of 6 ft. and under. I loved this putter when I was close to the hole.

Unfortunately, I wasn't always close to the hole (I'm a 20-handicap golfer, right?) and found that on longer putts, 30+ ft, I didn't get the nice feedback I was accustomed to with shorter putts. I probably just chalk this up to being a 41-year-old hacker and not having enough practice with distance control. On pretty much all longer putts, I was either too short or too long. So, as far as being more accurate with the FGP putter, I definitely wasn't only with the short putts.

I liked the RifleScope Technology, as it made for a proper set-up each time you put it. That's why the shorter putts were money most of the time. The longer putts, as I said earlier, are still a work in progress. Most of my misses go to the right, and something with some practice might improve.

Conclusion
I really liked a lot of things about the FGP putter, including the success I had with short putts and its overall look. The price of the FGP putter is also very reasonable, considering putters of the same quality sell for double or more. You can pick up an FGP putter at Golf Town right now for $159.99.

Will the FGP putter knock my current mallet putter out of the bag? Probably not. As a high handicap golfer, and because of the troubles I had with longer putts with the FGP, I need something that will be more forgiving all around (SeeMore does make a mallet putter, though).

I could always carry 2 putters like Phil Mickelson did a while ago carrying two drivers. Never say never, right!

Bridgestone B330-RX Golf Ball Review

Bridgestone B330-RX Golf Ball Review

When the folks at Bridgestone sent me some balls to review I was initially excited as I've only every tried their E5 and E6 balls. When I found out they were sending the new B330-RX model I was ecstatic. Here's a Tour caliber ball optimized for you guested it, hackers with normal swing speeds that are under 105 MPH (Bridgestone calls them highly skilled players). So that you and me the normal or not so normal everyday golfer.

Here's What Bridgestone Says About This Ball:

* SOFTEST multi-layer Urethane Ball on the market
* Large & SOFT Gradational Core with a soft feel and added forgiveness
* Mantle layer for high repulsion and workability
* SOFT Urethane Cover with Seamless 330 dimple design for pinpoint accuracy

On The Course
So would my slower swing speed benefit from the soft core of the B330-RX and bring me that added distance and control we as golfer so covet. I've been testing out this ball for the better part of the beginning of the season and here's the scoop from a 20 handicap golfer.

Driver/ Irons
The performance of the ball off irons is great. When you hit the B330-RX well with your irons compressing the soft core I love feeling the ball compress on iron shots. Well struck approaches, even with long irons, stop within a few feet of where the ball lands on the green. I found distances with my irons to be about the same as with most tour caliber balls.

The big stick handled the B330-RX very nicely although I didn't get any huge distance gains with the B330-RX I loved the fact that off my Nickent Evolver driver the ball launched mid to high with a beautiful boring flight.

Short Game
Chipping and pitching with this ball was very nice. I'm a 20 handicap golfer so I don't spin the ball but I do like when I pitch the ball and it stays online and stays where I want it to, the B330-RX responded nicely. Chipping the B330-RX was beautiful and consistent as well. As a 20 handicap golfer I need a ball that can help my short game. The B330-RX gets good marks here.

Putting
For me this is where the B330-RX excelled. I loved putting with this ball. Off both my regular putter (Scotty Cameron Red X3) and the one I'm presently reviewing (SeeMore FGP) the ball rolled pure and very consistent. I was even more consistent with distance control with this ball and the SeeMore which I can't say with other balls I used with the SeeMore. A downright pleasure to line up and putt.

Price
At GolfTown you can pick up a dozen of these for $44.49. Try online and you might get it cheaper.

Conclusion
I really liked the B330-RX especially off the putter. I was a little disappointed with the distance off the driver with the B330-RX as it was pretty much the same as most balls I've played although the ball flight and consistency was great so I really can't complain that much. If this ball was a little cheaper this could be my ball this Summer.

Can An Amateur Win The Irish Open?

If Shane Lowry can pull together another decent round in Ireland he may just pull off a win at the 2009 3 Irish Open. Can he beat all the professionals in the field I know I'll be watching. This is how to play a bunker shot on a links golf course.

Golf Graphic Track Jacket Review - Puma Golf

Golf Graphic Track Jacket Review - Puma Golf
Watching the Irish Open today and seeing the Swede Johan Edfors doing well in some harsh links conditions got me to thinking about keeping warm while playing golf (Those guys at the Irish Open are going to need some Irish Whiskey to keep warm after the round ). One piece of golf apparel that I received from Puma Golf recently was their Golf Graphic Track Jacket and this has been a great addition to my golfing attire especially for those cool morning rounds.

Comfort
The jacket I received was XL in gray violet. I first wore the track jacket extensively at the beginning of the season at the driving range trying to work out the swing kinks. The thing I loved about it was it not only kept me warm but it it also kept me dry with Puma's moisture management system. It wicks any moisture away from your skin. Great for us here in Canada where one day it can be in 30's and the next you can be dealing with frost delays.

I usually don't wear golf apparel that fits to tight/snug but Puma Track Jacket is very fitted and this was another feature I really like about it. When you were swinging the club it never hinder your swing in the least. The XL fit my frame to a tee and even with the rib knit cuffs and hems and the raglan sleeves there was still plenty of room for my 6'5" frame to swing any club from the driver to my wedges.

Look
The design of the front of the jacket is inspired by Puma Golf's 18-hole logo definitely very flashy and it was something that I'm not accustomed to wearing so it did take awhile for me to get use to (As well as my kids saying "boys don't wear orange" I had to get over). So if your not into brighter colors you might want to check out the black version of the Golf Graphic Track Jacket which is a little more subdued.

Conclusion
If your into golf apparel that's both fashionable and functional then look no further than the Puma Golf's Graphic Track Jacket. Great for keeping you warm and not bulky so you can freely swing the club. Puma's 18 Hole logo design looks modern and flashy great for on or off the golf course.

The Golf Graphic Track Jacket is 100% polyester machine washable warm, line dry. It comes in either black or gray violet and in sizes ranging from XS to XXL. Right now at Golf Town it can be your for $99.99 but I have seen it for cheaper at a few online stores.

Daly Hopes Good Play Continues in Ireland

So much talk lately has been on John Daly's attire and yes Loudmouth Golf Clothing is definitely a conversation piece but Daly's game should be what we're talking about as he makes his way around Europe to sharpen up his game gone dull by years of neglect.

Hell he's even got a new coach:

"I love the way I am hitting the ball. I've never really had a teacher, but Rick [Phil Mickelson's former coach Rick Smith] has been keeping things simple.

"I'm making sure I finish the backswing [still the longest in golf] and the follow through.

I love following him on Twitter and getting the inside scoop of a golfer that pulls no punches.

And he loves Ireland. I'm very happy and Ireland should be a blast.

"I'm part-Irish and it feels like home there. Over the years I've had every drink they've got, but because of my surgery I can only sip whisky now and I'll be staying off the Guinness."

A man that's seen a lot and hasn't always made the right decisions, but haven't we all. Probably what makes Daly still relevant and popular.

All I know is this week I'll be following him along on the Net as he tries his hand at winning the Irish Open. God I hope Daly wears Loudmouth's Shagadelic pants in green because they'll look sweet when he hits the County Louth Golf Course on Thursday. We also hope the putts keep dropping with Daly using the Heavy Putter MID-WEIGHT K4 blade with so much success lately.

Stenson Looks Cool In Win At Players

I just loved watching Henrik Stenson this past weekend, especially on the final day of the Players Championship. He just looked so cool and calm on his way to a bogey free final 66 and beating Ian Poulter by four shots. You could tell he had a plan for the course and he stuck to it. Liking hitting his 13 degree three wood on most holes that other guys were hitting drivers his length and accuracy and timely putting went a long way in his victory. Here's what Henrik Stenson had in his bag en route to his Players Championship victory. It kind of looks like my bag a good assortment of brands.

DRIVER: Callaway FT-3 (9.5°) with Grafolloy Blue shaft
FAIRWAY WOODS: Callaway Big Bertha(13°, 19°) with Grafolloy Blue shafts
IRONS: Srixon I-506(3-PW)
WEDGES: Callaway X Tour Vintage (52°, 58°)
PUTTER: Yes! Donna
BALL: Srixon Z-Star

I really wish I just would of picked him in my Golf Fantasy Leagues because with the winning purse be $1.71 Million that would of been a great boost in some of my Fantasy Golf Leagues.

Nickent 4DX Evolver Driver Review

Nickent 4DX Evolver Review

I love trying out new drivers it's the club that has changed the most in my bag since I started golfing seriously 8 years ago. Just last season the following drivers were in my bag in no particular order: TaylorMade Burner, Cobra X Speed, Titleist 905R, TaylorMade R5 TP, Hibore XL and Tour XL . Who doesn't like the big stick there's nothing like hitting a solid drive down the middle of a fairway and the longer and straighter we get the better. I don't care if your a scratch golfer or a high handicapper all golfers want more distance from their driver. Is it a testosterone thing, yes I would have to say although few would admit it. The quest for the holy grail of drivers for me is both fun and frustrating. I don't have a lot of time to bang balls on the range so most of my testing is on the course which for me is the most fun but can be frustrating as well because I don't always score well but who am I kidding I'm not a pro and as long as I have fun.

So late this winter Nickent sent me out their 4DX Evolver driver to review and here's my take on the Nickent 4DX Evolver Driver. (Nickent was great in sending out the head I wanted to try (10.5º) as well as the shaft (UST V2 High Launch -Regular)).

Background
This driver was first introduced in 2008 where the talk was all about club adjustability and again in 2009 it still is. The main selling point for the 4DX Evolver is called IST, Interchangeable Shaft Technology. This is where Nickent takes customization to the next level. Just think you can now customize your club with whatever shaft you want and for whatever conditions you happen to play in. Like being one of the big boys on tour and having your own tour van along for the ride.

So you have a windy day, swap out your high launch shaft in just a minute you've popped your low launch shaft in the Evolver head with just a few easy twits of the torque wrench and it gets better. Just recently Nickent sent out a press release about them introducing CYG (Change Your Game) technology for the 4DX Evolver Driver. The Nickent 4DX Evolver will be the ultimate driver when it comes to customization it will have a hosel that features 26 different options to adjust face angle, lie angle and loft. Hopefully we'll get to review this new technology sometime down the road as well.

From Nickent:
Ultra-Thin Titanium Crown: Brazing an ultra-thin 0.4mm titanium crown reduces the weight in the crown by 20 grams, freeing up weight to be placed where you need it most — in the heel and toe to maximize performance.

A-Frame Face: The patented A-Frame face Technology raises the sweet-spot high on the face so solid contact is made more consistently.

XW Inserts: Nickent's XW inserts are the most sophisticated weight technology in the game. The polymer insert helps dampen vibration while the weights in each port help achieve a high MOI (moment of inertia) for maximum clubhead stability and forgiveness.

The Look and Feel
The look of the Nickent Evolver from address is very traditional for the purist who likes a classic looking pear shaped driver head. Flip the driver up to the see the sole and it's another story. Bright and flashy, the color scheme of bright green, silver, black and white really looks awesome.
The size of the Evolver head is just under 460CC at 454CC but doesn't look that large. Nickent has really done well in making this over sized titanium driver look very classy and not crazy large looking. The Evolver has a nice and subtle "N" as an alignment aid on the the head as well.

The head cover is solid on this driver. Taking the colors from the sole of the driver, the bright green, black, gray and added yellow really stands out from the rest of the drab head covers on my clubs. And with the colors of the UST V2 High Launch shaft (yellow/black/gray) this driver is pretty sexy looking.

After a few rounds with the 4DX Evolver I found the feel to be quite good giving me instance feedback on a well struck ball. If my draw turned into more of a hook I immediately knew it with a less then solid feel. Only a few times did I think I hit it well only to have blocked it out to the right, mostly due to my alignment and grip.

The factory D2 weight felt good and stable, and at 45.5″, the shaft isn’t as long as some OEMs are churning out at the moment so it worked well for me. Although I only got the one shaft with the driver and because of my height 6'5", I'm definitely interested in trying the Evolver with some other shafts with longer lengths.

Performance
After a few rounds I had the Evolver figured out and most of my drives were hit straight or with a slight draw around the 250-260 yd. mark. The odd time I would try to open up the face of the driver to hit a fade I had mixed results. On any mishits I still got decent length and usually left for me which is normal for me with just about any driver. The Evolver wasn't any longer than all the drivers I've tried last season but who cares when your in the middle of the fairway.

Conclusion

The 4DX Evolver driver is a very solid performer from Nickent. It can benefit any and all types of players especially with all the shaft options. If you especially like to tinker with your clubs then this is the club for you with the addition of the CYG technology golf techies will be drooling all over the Evolver in the months to come. The Evolver comes in both RH and LH options with lofts from 8º, 9º, 10.5º, 12º. The driver now retails for $279 with a UST SR3 shaft as wel as the new CYG technology.

Sean O'Hair's Numbers From Quail Hollow Don't Lie

You don't have to look to far as to why Sean O'Hair won the Quail Hollow Championship this past weekend, a huge win against a stellar field. His stat numbers are just plain awesome.

O'Hair ranked 7th in distance with an average of 312.6 yards, with a nice ranking of T19th for driving accuracy as well. He also ranked T3rd in greens in regulation, which is great as well considering the difficult Quail Hollow course. Look at the list of players who didn't even make the cut Sergio Garcia, VJ, Stewart Cink, Adam Scott, and Angel Cabrera to name a few.

Here's the weapons he used according to TaylorMade Golf: Sean O'Hair's WITB

Driver: R9™ 10.5°
Fairways: R9 3-wood 13°, r7 5-wood 17.5°
Irons: Tour Preferred® 4 – 9
Wedges: rac™ 48°, 50°, 54°
Putter: Rossa® Monza® Corza
Ball: TP Red™ LDP
Shoes: adidas Golf TOUR360 Limited
Apparel: Ashworth

I bet Sean woke with a big smile on his face this morning as he's now vaulted up to 12th in the World Rankings, 4th place on the U.S. Presidents Cup Team and he's now the only under 30 PGA Tour pro with 3 Tour victories.

This is the time of year that so many golf tournaments in the Ottawa have been finalized and an important tournament is coming up in September that will benefit the children in the area that are less fortunate by supplying them with snowsuits for the winter season. Just think of how cold it gets in Ottawa in the area and a kid not having a proper snowsuit.

The Snowsuit Fund is an Ottawa-based charity that raises funds for the purchase and distribution of snowsuits to needy children, 15 years and under, in our community.

September 21st is the date and the tournament is being hosted by the Royal Ottawa Golf Club. So join today as group or as individuals it doesn't matter. They have a online registration form to make it even easier to sign-up. Just think you get to help out Ottawa area kids plus you get to play the The Royal Ottawa Golf Club, a premier private club and an excellent test of golf. Although I never played there from what I here "amazing" doesn't do it justice.

More information and the format can be found here. So check it out and maybe free up the 21st of September to hit the links for the Snowsuit Fund.

Weeding Through The Spam

It seems wherever you go someone is selling something. Look no further than online social media sources like Twitter and Facebook. People selling DVDs that are "guaranteed to fix your golf swing" or the one I love "how to get more Twitter followers" or even all the wellness products being pushed. I really don't care about the best fat burners or a pill that's going to make me feel great all the time and it's "all natural". Weeding through all the spam if you would like sometimes leads me to a revelation and sometimes a pretty good idea or two. I even sometimes find a great tool to make blogging and my blogs better. Regardless without people selling their wares it would be just be boring out there, right?
