Loopers: A Caddie’s Twenty-Year Golf Odyssey Book Review

For the adventurer in all of us
Loopers: A Caddie’s Twenty-Year Golf Odyssey Book Review

You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy John Dunn’s Loopers: A Caddie’s Twenty-Year Golf Odyssey. In fact at numerous points during John’s stories of decade’s worth of being a club caddy from St. Andrews to Augusta, I hearkened back to my years of tree planting the B.C. Coast and travelling around in between. So Loopers is a book for those of us who either once had a life of nomadic means or who just like the thrill of adventure and a good story.

There’s a lot to like about Loopers. Each chapter is easy to read because of John’s great way of recounting his hilarious story from the past 20 years as a club caddie. It’s interesting to hear John talk about the different golfers (like Bill Gates and Arnold Palmer) he’s caddied for, some more fascinating than others.

As someone who writes about golf. I was fascinated about reading what a club caddie’s life is like. I’ve only had a caddy once and it was last Summer during my Cape Breton Golf Adventure. Having a caddy at Cabot Links definitely made the experience that much better and special. A caddy isn’t just the guy who lugs around your golf bag at that golf course you’re just dying to play. He’s also the guy who guides you around the golf course giving you insight, inspiration and maybe the directions to a good pub down the road.

From reading Loopers I don’t think John Dunn ever expected that his summer job as a caddy at the local course in Connecticut might turn into twenty years of Looping but it sure makes for some great stores.

John’s descriptions of the many caddies he befriended along with their shenanigans were a treat to read. Hearing about his caddy adventures at great golf locations like Augusta, Bandon Dunes, Shinnecock, and St. Andrews were inspiring. It’s fun having never been to any of these places to hear the side of the caddy.

One of the best chapters is when John hops on a plane to Scotland to see about a job at St.Andrews. He basically just walks in and gets a caddy job there with no experience. Grabs a bib and he's out on the course, priceless.

John Dunn's Loopers has everything you need for a great summer read, pick it up today!

Top 3 Holes At Taboo Resort

Again was very hard to come up with just 3 top holes at Taboo Resort the last course I played on my Muskoka Golf Adventure. Very solid par 5s with a great mix of holes and scenery in a very relaxing tranquil setting. Here they are:

Hole #4 Par 5
A great par 5 at 491 yds. from the whites. Play your first shot between the large bunker on the right and the smaller one on the left. Then lay up with your second shot to about the 100 yd. mark. Make sure you don't pull left or right as there's bunkers on both sides. Your short little wedge shot is still going to be tricky with a narrow green and two bunkers short that will gobble up your ball if your a little fat. Rough around the green is also thick so be consistent and firm with your chips and pitches.

Hole #6 Par 4
I'm normally not a big fan of dogleg holes especially when you don't have a great view of the landing area. #6 at Taboo is just fun because it differs with great terrain and a lovely view into the green. At 371 yds. it's not to long but you need a good drive to get a good view of the green. Your drive will have to carry a large pond to a narrow fairway, fun stuff don't be timid. The green on this hole is narrow plus there's a bunker left and front. Good bail out area in front of the green. Don't be long on this hole to much nasty trouble.

Hole #18 Par 5
Another stellar par 5 from Taboo #18 is a great finishing par 5. Fairly narrow fairway so watch your drive at 500 yds. and a dogleg left to an elevated sloping green this is a three shot par 5. You really have to be precise with your second and lay it up away from the one rocky area in the middle of the fairway as well as the ones left and right further up the fairway. This is one beautiful hole I took lots of pictures with my iPhone below are just two. Depending on where the pin is this green is quite spacious and sloping with the 2 pin position being the hardest on plateau far left. What did you shoot, bogey for me pretty damn happy.

My Top 3 Holes At Deerhurst Resort

Got to play Deerhurst Resort Highlands Golf Course my second day of my Muskoka Golf Adventure. My buddy and I truly loved this course as it was a fair test of golf. We loved it so much we ended up playing 14 more holes after our lunch at Steamers Restaurant. Here's my top holes at Deerhurst.

#8 Par 3
A short par 3 at 131 yds from the white tees. This hole is all about club selection. Your hitting your shot from a elevated tee deck so playing this hole for the first time would always be daunting. Anything short and your in a large gorge. Hazards long and left here can lead to bogey or worse. The green is shared with #17 so don't go to much right either.

#10 Par 4
A beautiful par 4. You tee off high above the fairway with rock outcropping all to your right. Had two great drives here both ended up into the rough. Just make sure you take an extra club to get out. Once you get to the green you'll have tiers and undulations to deal with. A two putt is good on this green.

#11 Par 4
This downhill par 4 is fun to play. I ended up with a 4 and got a 7 a few hours later. You have to make the fairway with your tee shot. Then don't be short as your ball will get sucked into one of 4 greenside bunkers.

Rickie Fowler US Open Scripting Plus Limited Edition Paint-Splattered Accessories

Rickie's Puma scripting for US Open. Here's the breakdown for each day. Thoughts? I like the looks but again to much vibrant orange on Sunday. I know Rickie loves his Oklahoma State Cowboys but a little more subtle would be better in my eyes. Really think Puma should of incorporated the paint-splattered accessories on one of the days not just today (Wednesday), love that look.

My Top 3 Holes at Muskoka Bay Club

In April, Golf Week published there Top 40 Best Canadian Modern Golf Courses. Muskoka Bay Club was ranked #15. This past Friday I got to play Muskoka Bay the first day of my Muskoka Golf Adventure. At most high end resort golf courses it's very hard to target three of your favorite holes but here's my attempt.

#4 Shorty - Par 4
Played the whites and from 278 you can take driver out and try to make the green from the elevated tee deck. Pretty narrow so the smart play may be to hit hybrid about 180- 190 yard drive. Setting up a wedge in to this well guarded green. On the left with a plethora of bunkers and the back with good old Muskoka rock. Could be birdie or a snowman.

#9 The Narrows - Par 4
From the whites this 343 yard par 4 looks slightly shorter from the elevated tee deck. Might have to do with the visually intimidating rock outcroppings. A hybrid down to about 150 yds. in makes for a very hard shot into this seemingly small green. The rocks are narrow and will gobble up your ball if your not accurate enough. When you get up there to see how much space you have you'll want to play it again immediately. A hole like no other golf hole I've ever played.

#17 Waterloo -Par 3
Played from the blues at 175 yds. A par 3 with no bail out areas you have to be accurate with whatever club you choose. A large pond is a wonderful hazard on this longer par 3. If you are accurate with your distance, you'll be on looking for a birdie but happy with a par as this green has many tiers and undulations to deal with.

2013 U.S. Open Scripting: Adidas Style - Dustin Johnson, Jason Day

As a golf fan you always love when another major roles around. This week the Pros who have qualified will be outside Philadelphia at Merion Golf Club to do battle. The course hasn't been used as a US Open venue in 32 years.  Some say the US Open is the hardest major to win as the USGA sets up the courses to play tough and the last man standing wins. Well with all the wet weather that's been hitting the Philadelphia area can the relatively short course at 6,996-yard stand the US Open test again? With it's wealth of history I believe it can.

With another major comes various companies apparel scripting today we look at the scripting by Adidas Golf for Dustin Johnson and Jason Day.

Similar to the Masters and the Players Championship Team Adidas will be wearing the same script again at the US Open. Good thing the likes of Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and Sergio Garcia aren't paired together for the first two rounds this week or maybe that's what Adidas was hoping. An army of red, white, grey and black.

This color scheme is more likely a tribute to the red wicker baskets that adorn the top of the red and white striped flagsticks at host course Merion, rather than any connection to the colors of the US Open.

It will be interesting to see if the players stick to the script unlike Jason Day who had a bit of trouble at the Masters confusing Friday and Saturdays golf clothing. What are your thoughts?

Thursday’s shirt: white/black
Friday’s shirt: chrome/university red
Saturday’s shirt: university red/chrome
Sunday’s shirt: black/university red

A Guide to Looking after your Golf Clubs

Taking care of your clubs is important, both because you want them to last and because you do not want poorly maintained clubs causing any problems with your game. It is important to spend a little more time and effort in caring for your clubs since they are an expensive purchase. A well maintained set of clubs can last a lifetime and hold a decent resale value if you are looking to trade in for some new clubs. Here are some general tips on how to maintain your clubs.

1) Storage
Clubs should be stored in a cool, dry place. Try to avoid keeping your clubs in the garage as they can often be damp, which will promote rust on steel shafts. In addition, try not to keep your clubs where they are exposed to humid conditions as this could cause the glues and resin under the grip to weaken.

2) Use your head overs
Make sure to use the head covers on your clubs. It sounds simple enough but many golfers even fail to do this. It is important to use head covers as they will provide a necessary cushion to prevent dinging or scratching of the clubs, even in the bag.

3) Clean your clubs
Ideally, you should inspect your clubs prior to and after every few rounds, and every time following playing in the rain.

Start with a bucket of warm soapy water and let the clubs soak heads down for a few minutes. This will loosen the dirt that got worked into the grooves of the clubface. After they have finished soaking, take each club and use a toothbrush to clean out the grooves on the clubface. Once you have got rid of any dirt or debris on the golf club, rinse off the club head and dry using a towel.

4) Use clean golf balls
Try to use clean golf balls as much as possible. A quick wipe with a towel before you hit off the tee will save the faces of your club being damaged by sand, stones and mud that may have gathered on the ball.

5) Shaft care
Check the shaft for nicks, cracks and dents. Golfers should avoid slamming their clubs, leaning on them or putting any unnecessary strain on them, since this can damage the shaft.

Graphite shafts are considerably less durable than steel shafts and require special care. Each graphite shaft is covered by a layer of paint and another layer of polyurethane. If these layers get scratched away, the graphite itself becomes exposed which can lead to damage. Longneck head covers are useful to protect graphite shafts from nicks and scratches in the bag.

6) Stay calm
It might sound ridiculous, but an awful lot of club damage is caused by players who lose their temper on the course. Next time you want to smash your club against the tree, DON’T!

7) Grips
Grips are very important and should be checked regularly for wear. If there is fading or it becomes slippery then the grip should be replaced. At Golfbidder, we stock a great selection of grips from Golfpride and Lamkin in various colours.

It is easy to keep your golf clubs well maintained. All that is required are head covers, a towel and club cleaning materials. If you look after your clubs, your clubs will look after you!

FILA Golf Apparel Review: London Waterproof Wind Jacket

With the wet spring we’ve had here in the Ottawa area a good rain jacket has been a must for those of us addicted to the game of golf. It just so happens I’ve had the chance to test out the FILA London Waterproof WindJacket. I’ve always been impressed with FILA’s golf apparel here’s how the London jacket fared.

First Impressions
Out of the box the London Jacket looks pretty ordinary. More like a jacket your Dad might wear. Once you wear this jacket that's when it begins to impress. The London Waterproof Wind Jacket is very versatile I’ve worn it golfing, working at Rideau View Golf Club, and casually out and about.

The XL fit quite roomy than more form fitting golf jackets I’ve had the chance to review. There was definitely no resistance at any point during my golf swing.

 Waterproof Baby!
One of the great features of this jacket is the fact that it’s waterproof. FILA has done a great job by using a lightweight fabric (Body: 100% Polyester Mechanical Stretch & Lining: 100% Polyester) that is both certified waterproof as well as breathable allowing moisture to dissipate away from the fabric. FILA have used waterproof tape on seams that are more prone to water/wind exposure to get the utmost waterproofness.

From playing golf in the rain this spring to working part-time on the Turf Team at Rideau View Golf Club the London Jacket gets high marks in the waterproof category.

Nice Hood
Another plus from this jacket is that the FILA London waterproof wind jacket has a great hood. It is detachable but I left it on most of the time as it seemed to work perfectly over any caps I wore during rain showers or colder weather this spring. Good job FILA!

Conclusion
At $110 the London Jacket falls around the average price point of most golf jacket. With high marks for lightweight waterproof fabrics and versatility. FILA has done another nice job with it's London jacket.

ECCO Golf Street Shoe Review

I've been lucky enough to review numerous pairs of ECCO Golf shoes over the last few years. Each year they seem to surprise me with there incredible comfort. This season has been no different, as I've had the chance to test out a pair of 2013 ECCO Street Golf Shoes since he start of the season here in the Ottawa area.

The Scoop

Comfort: These shoes are just amazingly comfortable and that's right out of the box. No break in time needed with ECCO Golf Street Shoes. ECCO uses camel leather on this version, which is both soft and durable. The lining ensures a flexible fit with just the right amount of anatomically shaped insole for a perfect fit and feel.

Versatile: I've worn my Golf Streets while working my part-time job on the Turf Team at Rideau View Golf Club. During practice sessions as well as for a few rounds of golf. While working my full-time job at Canada Post delivering the mail and finally just casually out and about. I haven't met a golf yet that can pull of all these scenes have you?

Color: I got my ECCOs in Titanium/Wild Dove/Brick just a superb colour on and off the golf course.

Traction: Improved traction for ECCO in this version of the Golf Street. With pre-moulded traction bars in over 800 angles I never lost traction during my swing or walking the course.

Pondering
I always wonder how these type of spikeless golf shoes will last over the long term but ECCO does state their TPU traction bars have been tested to last longer than regular rubber.

Although my feet have yet to get wet in my Golf Streets (and yes I have worn them multiple times in wet conditions) Golf Streets are not waterproof but do provide superb weather resistance as well as being perspiration resistant.

Conclusion
ECCO continues to raise the bar when it comes to spikeless golf shoes. This 2013 version somehow seems to have improved on previous years version. The comfort alone is worth the price tag of $220.00, add in the fact you can wear this golf shoe anywhere is a huge bonus. ECCO once again has a winner in the Golf Street. If Freddie Couples can be cool in these then why not you.

Picking the Right Clubs for Your Swing

A large part of perfecting your swing is practice; let’s make no bones about it. You’re not going to be scoring regular birdies until you’ve spent a good few years out on the green, swinging for all your worth. That said, none of the masters analysed in the videos below could hit half as well without the right clubs.

The wrong clubs won’t match the speed of your swing, or the required shaft flex. Instead, they’ll force you hook, slice or mishit even the simplest shots. You can work round all these problems, and learn to adapt to your clubs, but it’s far simpler to eliminate such concerns altogether by equipping yourself with clubs that provide you with the right amount of flex, and the proper choice of club head.

Your club’s flex plays probably the biggest part in determining the accuracy of your swing. Not enough flex and you’ll be wasting power, too much and you’ll have problems controlling the ball. There’s a temptation, particularly among male golfers, to pick the stiffest clubs you can manage both because pros normally use extra stiff clubs, and because nobody wants to be seen hitting plain old regulars. This is a huge mistake. Choosing the right amount of flex can be truly game changing; allowing you to hit the ball with the face of your club square on, and drastically improving the accuracy, trajectory and distance of your shot. Despite appearances, a slightly looser senior or regular flex club can open up a whole world of opportunities for the amateur golfer. The best way to find out what flex your swing is suited to is to take yourself to a pro and have them measure your swing speed, but it is relatively easy to estimate yourself.

First, you’ll need to calculate your swing speed. To do this, take a look at the clubs you’re using to hit from about 150 yards. If it’s an 8 or 9 iron your swing speed is probably right up there at about 93 mph. This is unlikely though. It’s far more likely that your hitting with either a 6 or a 7-iron, which would put your speed at around 85-90 mph, or a 5 iron, which would put your speed at around 75-80 mph. If you’re hitting with a 4 iron you're probably just hitting 60mph, and a 3 iron puts you well under.

Once you know your swing speed, you can properly select the right flex. Normally swing speed and flex directly correlate like this: People with a swing speed of less than 60 should be hitting with a ladies flex, people with a swing speed of 60-74 should use a regular or senior flex, and anybody hitting between 74 and 90 should be using a stiff flex. If your swinging at anything over 90 you should probably be using an ultra-stiff flex.

There are other things to consider besides swing speed though; if you have a very smooth swing, for instance, you might find that a softer flex allows you to hit the ball more accurately even if you have a fast swing. Conversely, anyone with a jerky swing would probably benefit from a slightly stiffer, more forgiving flex.

Once you’ve settled on a flex, the only other thing that you need to do is select the correct heads. Golf clubs with a half-cavity or blade head offer better ball control, and can help inconsistent players perfect their swing, while full-cavity clubs, which are generally used by high-handicap players, can help to get the ball in the air consistently, while robbing you of the large sweet spot offered by their half-cavity cousins.

Once you’ve selected the right flex and club heads, and equipped yourself with a pair of golf clubs that are actually suited to your play style, you should find it an awful lot easier to improve on your swing.
