Oak Bay Golf & Country Club is located on the eastern shores of Georgian Bay an area I tend to visit a few times a year. I was finally lucky enough to finally play the course which I've been meaning to do since it opened in the Fall of 2010.
When you're travelling North up Highway 400 you actually enter Muskoka County before you get off at the Oak Bay exit. With Oak Bay's picturesque terrain you defintely get the Muskoka feel.
Oak Bay's clubhouse just recently opened and when talking to Jason Bennett the Director of Golf at Oak Bay he was extatic about the opening and the putting green practise area that will be built soon in front of the clubhouse facing #10 and #18.
The staff is very friendly and helpful at Oak Bay. Jack, the starter gave us some insight into the course which was very helpful. Gus had to get a picture with Laurel the cart girl. She was driving an awesome John Deere Gator converted to the perfect cart for beverage/snack dispensing.
The Bermuda greens and fairways were in great condition and from working at a golf course you can tell the maintenance staff take great pride and care when it comes to the aesthetics of the course.
The greens are definitely firm but that's not unusual for such a new course so most of the time its best to be short of the hole for best birdie results.
With four sets of tees Oak Bay can be played from whatever length you're accustomed too. My suggestion is if you're playing for the first time play one tee forward. Oak Bay is a challenging course to play and playing a little closer will give you a better initial experience. My son Gus really enjoyed teeing off a lot closer on each hole especially the Par 3s.
Hole #15 is Oak Bay's signature hole. A very difficult par 3 that has a huge carry over a marsh land. It's to bad there isn't a bail out area on this hole. If you're short or long you're dead in the water. A hole you'll either be smiling or frowning afterwards.
Oak Bay has many fun and challenging par 4s including above, the short par 4 #14. You can read my other article on Oak Bay about my favourite holes here.
The strengths of Oak Bay:
- Course conditions
- Scenic and tough par 3s
- Knowledgable and friendly staff
- Scenery and terrain of the area
To play Oak Bay it will cost you between $44-$60 Monday to Thursday during high season which is June 5th to September 11th, $48-$69 from Friday to Sunday(Holidays). That doesn't include cart which is extra.
Very reasonably priced considering the quality of golf and now the updated services.
