John Daly Opens w/ a 70 - Nice Eagle John!

Good to see John Daly off to a pretty good start in Spain opening with a 2 under par 70. Daly on his back 9 today hit a beautiful second shot(with a hybrid no less) on #7 and converted the eagle putt. The weather is suppose to turn foul so let's hope Daly has another good one tomorrow.

Anthony Kim Should Be One Of Your Fantasy Picks At Quail Hollow

Even though Kim has a bit of a roller coaster year with injuries and some erratic play how can you not pick a guy who won it last year and has another top 5 performance the year before. With a stellar field he'll rise to the top. Check out Kim's beautiful blast from the fairway at Quail Hollow at the 2008 Wachovia Championship.

Pro Golfers Who Twitter and The Other Guys Like Me

I first started my Twitter life March 15th and I've been loving it ever since. With 112 updates later, 694 followers and 1096 following if you haven't got a Twitter I highly suggest it. If your lost with this last sentence please see here. Think of Twitter as a mini blog with “tweets” or short messages posted by others out there in Twitter land. For me I let my subscribers know about any contests or giveaways I'm running, any golf equipment reviews or maybe how my round went or sometimes maybe even some personal tidbits. It’s like my blog except with fewer words(140 characters to be exact).

I like it for keeping track of what some pro golfers are up to. Stewart Cink is one of the best with lots of great insight into what goes on behind the scenes during a typical tour players week. I'm really excited to get the scoop on John Daly and his adventures as he look to be playing the next 4 weeks in Europe starting with the Open de EspaƱa this week. Another pro I like to follow is Pat Perez.

If the LPGA is more to your liking look no further than Natalie Gulbis and Morgan Pressel who update the going ons of their careers on a rather timely basis.

Here's a list of pros so far on Twitter if there are any missing please let me know.

New SeeMore FGP Stainless Series Putter - First Impressions/Review

Last week I received a new FGP stainless steel putter from SeeMore Putters to test out and of course I had to get out and give it a go. So these are my first impressions of the putter after one round at my local course.

The specs on the putter are as follows:

Loft- 3.5 degrees
Lie- 70 degrees
Length- 35"
Finish: Black Satin

My Handicap: 19.6
First Round Putting Stats 31 putts: 7 one putts, 2 three putts

Some putter background; My usual putter is a Scotty Cameron Red X3 at 35". I've been playing it a season and a half. The SeeMore FGP stainless steel putter is a center shafted blade putter so I was eager to try it as the only other blade putter I've used was a Never Compromise #1 Milled Series putter and I've never used a center shafted putter either.

After getting to the course early, I was certainly glad to hit a bunch of putts because with this type of putter (RifleScope Technology/ center shafted) I had to play this putter in the middle of my stance. A bit of a change from my normal putting stance. The practice obviously helped at least with the first few holes as I one putted the first 5 holes. :)

When it comes to putters the look and style of a putter is such a personal thing. For me the FGP putter that I received came in black satin finish. I love the look of the black finish on this putter, the black matte finish frames the ball beautifully and as soon as I put it down I liked the way it looked to my eye.

The feel of this putter is great all the weight is behind the ball. The ball really comes off the 100% milled faced beautifully. Like I said for the first few holes the putter was hot as I'd pick my line, aligned the putter and give it a whack and they were going in. Later in the round the putts weren't falling as well because I had some longer putts and was still trying to figure out how to adjust to speed of the greens or lack thereof and the length of my stroke with this new putter. (the greens at my course weren't the best as it's still pretty early in the season)

I look forward to continuing to test out this putter further this weekend as I'm off and the weather looks good. SeeMore Putters definitely has my attention. You have to like a putter that has some great history to it. If you didn't know the original FGP blade putter won the 1999 US Open and 2007 Masters.

iPods And Golf A New Trend

At the range lately I've been listening to my MP3 player and for some days it's great to just zone out hit some balls and listen to your favorite tunes. Recently though on one of the many golf forums I frequent a golfer brought up a great point about golfers using their iPods. When you're golfing do you not use most if not all your senses so if you can't hear the ball off the club head are you not cheating yourself out of true feedback. Many people have had different views saying it's a young persons trend, others says it's been around since the dawn of the Walkman. To some golfers using MP3 players during a solo round just makes it different and soothing. Some purists say it has no place. What do you think?

Bridgestone Mid GC Irons Review - Part 1 First Impressions

Bridgestone Mid GC Irons Review

Tale of the Tape
Name: Ottawa Golf Blog
Swing: Right handed
Handicap= 19.6
Age=41
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 200 lbs.
Full Rounds a Year= 25-30
Usual Ball Flight= Baby draw, straight
Usual Miss= left, big hook

The Opponent
Make: Bridgestone
Model: Mid GC
Irons: 4-PW
Shaft: Stiff 1050GH Nippon Shafts
L/L/L: Standard

Just to give you some feedback last year I played a set of Titleist 735cm irons that I hit OK especially the shorter irons but I had some problems with the longer irons. Now I'm a bit of a club ho and sometimes I end up testing out and playing clubs that are way over my playing ability probably this was the case with the 735cms as well as a few other clubs that have passed my door. But call me crazy I love to try different clubs and sometime they work and other times you just have to move on.

So what is a 19 handicapper to try now. Well they might not be Bridgestone's latest offering but I've always like the look of Bridgestone irons so when a set of new Bridgestone GC Mid irons happen to cross my path I grabbed them and have been testing them out for most of the Spring. I'm one of those crazy golfers that keeps back issues of various golf magazines (even thought the wife tries to get rid of them) I always make sure I keep the Golf Digest issue that has the Hot list in it and these irons made the list back in 2007 so why not give them a try right?

Here's what Bridgestone has to say:

Adding to its already popular TOUR level golf clubs and balls, today Bridgestone introduced its new Gravity Chamber (GC) series of irons for longer distance, higher moment of inertia and improved launch conditions. The GC Series features two models, the GC.MID and the GC.OS, designed to make shots easier to control for two distinctly different types of players. The GC series employs a technology that allows Bridgestone engineers to remove inefficient weight from the clubhead where it is not helping to improve golfers’ games, and strategically repositions it to create a center of gravity at an optimal location, improving launch conditions and accuracy.

The GC.MID irons provide the feel better players demand, with forgiveness golfers of all ability levels can use. The GC.MID features a Gravity Chamber in the back cavity of the clubhead from which significant weight is removed. The weight is repositioned by using Gravity Disks that increase moment of inertia and as a result produces a reduction in clubhead twisting on off-center hits, generating a straighter ball flight.

The strategic placement of the disks creates a precise and progressive center-of-gravity location that provides enhanced control and improved launch conditions. The combination of repositioned weight and progressive center-of-gravity produces long irons that fly high and are easy to square, and short irons that have a flatter ball flight with greater stability for ultimate shot shaping potential. This is accomplished by positioning the disks farther apart in the long irons and progressing the disks closer together throughout the mid and short irons.

Both sets of Gravity Chamber irons are created from 431 soft stainless steel for tremendous feel and consistency. The GC series of clubs all feature a thin-face design that increases ball speed at impact, translating into irons that fly further. In addition, the strategic location of the Gravity Disk placement in both sets produces a more solid feel and sound when striking the ball.

"The GC series of irons are our most forgiving clubs yet," said Mike Moxie, Golf Club Marketing Manager, Bridgestone Golf. "By providing better players with unsurpassed feel and workability that they demand, yet providing some assistance to those players who aspire to play a premium level product, we feel that we’ve created two sets of irons meeting the requirements of a wide range of skill levels. Don’t be surprised to see people in your weekend foursome and the best players in the world relying on this breakthrough technology this fall."

The GC.MID irons are available in 2-PW with stock Nippon® NSPRO® 1050GH shafts. The GC.OS irons are available in 3-SW with stock Nippon® NSPRO® 950GH shafts. The clubs also feature a Golf Pride® Gravity Chamber grip. Custom options for grips and shafts are available. (The GC.MID will be the first clubs in the Bridgestone line that will be available in a left-handed model (available Spring 2007).

Both the GC.MID and GC.OS irons will feature a suggested retail price of $699 (steel) and $799 (graphite) and will be available at golf specialty stores and green grass retailers nationwide, beginning Fall 2006. For more information on the GC Series and any other Bridgestone Golf products visit www.bridgestonegolf.com.

My initial impressions on my new Bridgestone GC Mids w/Nippon 1050GH's after some early Spring range sessions and a few rounds.

Looks - These really don't look like a GI iron (game improvement). They have a real thin top line and very little offset as you can see from the pictures. I like the fact that even with the gravity disks in the cavity of these irons they still aren't busy looking. No crazy colors or designs. The heads on these irons are just the right size not to big or not to small hence the model name (Mid- midsize). Because they are game improvement clubs the heads are on the heavy side.

Feel - These feel quite soft for a cast club, you can definitely feel when you hit both good and bad shots. I've played a Nippon shaft in my 21 degree Titleist 585H hybrid and I've always like it. So far I'm still figuring out if I like these shafts. For me they have a lower ball flight similar to my 735cm w/ DG S300s.

9 Iron and 7 iron

Forgiveness - These are pretty forgiving clubs especially on toe and heel shots. You still get pretty good distance and for me it usually ended up left. You just know it's your swing that's the trouble. So there is definite feedback when it comes to toe and heel shots.

4 Iron

Workability - My natural ball flight tends to be a draw and when worse comes to worse the dreaded hook. So far I'm still trying to figure out the workability of these irons. The longer irons I've only been able to hit either straight or with a draw. I've been playing into some crazy winds lately so the lower ball flight I've been getting has been good. The short irons have been mainly straight and the distance a little bit shorten then my last clubs.

Brian Gay Looks Good In Victory at Hilton Head

Check out my latest Sligo Wear Review.

I normally don't rout against PGA Tour players but this past weekend I just couldn't believe Brian Gay was putting on a clinic and going to win the Verizon Heritage by a whopping 10 shots. Just a few weeks earlier I'd picked him and he didn't even make the cut. He's been one of my go to guys for my Fantasy Leagues, I just can't seem to pick him at the right time. This guys is 4th in driving accuracy and 40th in putting average and up to 7th in FedEx Cup points. It was inevitable he'd win again I'm just mad I didn't pick him this past week.

With Brian Gay victory comes another win for Sligo Wear out of Mississauga Canada. Congrats to them as Gay was looking great in his Sligo Wear en route to winning the tournament. Ottawa Golf Blog hopes to have a review of their 2009 line soon.

Press Release:

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - Attired in the aggressive colors of that have become Sligo Wear Inc.'s trademark, Brian Gay fired a seven--under-par 64 on April 19 for a four-round record of 20-under-par to win the Verizon Heritage at fabled Harbour Town Golf Links by 10 strokes. It was the second victory of Gay's career on the PGA Tour and his second wearing Sligo's trendy golfwear that has made Sligo Wear one of the golf industry's fastest growing apparel companies. Gay's previous PGA Tour victory was at the 2008 Mayakoba Classic.

Gay's victory at the Verizon Heritage also was the second of the season for Sligo Wear. Bubba Dickerson won the Louisiana Open sporting Sligo Wear this past March.

"We couldn't be more excited and happy for Brian,'' said Sligo Wear Director of Sales Shawn Aucoin. "He's a terrific representative for Sligo Wear. The exposure Brian received on CBS during Sunday's telecast really showed off Sligo Wear's committment to fashion forward golf apparel. The viewers obviously loved Brian's look as the number of page views on our new web site(www.sligowear.com) was off the charts.''

Gay's 10-shot victory is the largest on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson won the 2006 BellSouth Classic by 13 strokes and came in his 10th start at the Heritage. Gay, who has won more than $1.6 million this season, has made 10 cuts in 11 starts this season. In addition to his Heritage victory, Gay has a T5 at the Sony Open and a T6 at the FBR Open.

The victory at Harbour Town also vaulted Gay to seventh on the on the FedExCup points list with 927 points.

Sligo Wear was founded by a group of friends and active golfers each of who were frustrated by a lack of fashionable and proper fitting affordable golf apparel in the market place. At Pro Am to the Azores in early 2004, they noticed a different fashion for golf apparel and upon their started Sligo Wear Inc.

Sligo Wear was an immediate success in the Canadian market and in 2007, the company signed a deal with Fairway Styles Inc. of Richmond, Va., to bring fashion change to the U.S. market

New Nickent 4DX Evolver Uses "CYG Technology"

I've had my Nickent 4DX Evolver since about February but it's only been in the last few weeks I've actually been able to use it outside. To be able to interchange shafts quick and easy was definitely an appeal of playing this club. So I was glad when Nickent sent one over (Full review coming soon).

So far I've really liked the performance, so I was pleased to here about Nickent's plans for a new type and improved hosel. This hosel has twenty-six different positions to alter face angle, launch angle, lie angle and the loft not to mention the Evolver's original capabilities to interchange the driver with the shaft of your choice. Can you say cool!

This new technology from Nickent is called "CYG Technology" because it allows players the opportunity to "Change Your Game" by changing the face angle up to 3 degrees in either direction. The ability to change the face angle combined with the existing option to change your shaft provide the ultimate experience in adjustability and extreme confidence. On a windy day all players can choose to lower the trajectory of the ball flight to combat the weather conditions.

Here's the rest of the press release:

The New Nickent CYG technology gives the average golfer the treatment of a TOUR professional. For years, TOUR players with access to a Tour van have had the opportunity to alter the face angle of their driver. Now any player or fitter can open the clubface 3 degrees to combat a hook or to close the clubface 3 degrees to battle the day's slice or power fade on his own. In addition to open and closed club face positions, the Nickent CYG hosel also allows the player to increase or decrease loft by to help battle the wind, or hit it high for a feathery landing or to find the proper trajectory to maximize distance and roll.

"The 4DX Evolver driver was the original driver to offer the players the ability to be Interchangeable" said John Hoeflich, Chief Operating Officer of Nickent Golf. "Now all players can quickly change shafts and adjust loft up to 1.5 degrees. The new hosel can also change the lie angle and face angle up to 3 degrees. The ability to change face angle will improve confidence at address in all players. The Nickent 4DX Evolver with the all-new CYG hosel is the ultimate in customizable drivers."

Nickent CYG gives all players the ability to fine tune their game, no matter what element stands in their way. The CYG hosel allows for total adjustability allows the player the opportunity to find the right flight trajectory for them. By closing the face angle, the loft of the club increases at impact which promotes a right-to-left ball flight with higher trajectories. By setting the face angle open, it decreases loft at impact creating a lower, more penetrating trajectory with a left-to-right flight pattern. The new hosel, rotated 180 degrees creates a neutral face angle and an upright lie angle. There are 26 different combinations of adjustability to customize your driver to your needs.

The new Nickent CYG Hosel will be a feature of all 4DX Evolver drivers with no additional charge. The new hosel will be available as a regular feature of the 4DX Evolver starting May 1st at a wide variety of retail shops as well as NickentGolf.com. The same torque wrench that comes with the original 4DX Evolver is used to loosen the shaft, then with a simple click any player can adjust the face angle to find the perfect setting for their swing. With a plethora of shafts available in a multitude of flexes as well as 26 face angles to choose from the Nickent 4DX Evolver driver is in the closest thing you will find to owning your own tour van.

Oh How Times Have Changed

My third child is just a little over a year old and it's funny how after two kids already the third one definitely gets a few more bumps and bruises. That and the fact he's a boy it really seems like sometimes the poor kid is going at it alone. Now of course I'm joking because he has two parents and of course his two doting sisters but sometimes it seems like all those safety things you did with the first go out the window for the third. You still use all the safety gates, the safety covers to go over the electrical outlets and bathroom safety products it just seems your a little more relax and not as uptight if your kid falls.

The other day my son and I are outside and he's playing with a stick in the backyard not a big deal except the stick is almost as big as him something I would of never let my daughters play with at the same age. He loves the outside and he's always throwing balls (Watch the golf balls Gus) he's out there swinging some of my old golf clubs. It's not anarchy it's just different when you've got three kids right?

Shingo Katayama Rocks

Who would of thought Shingo Katayama would have contended in the Masters with solid rounds of 67, 73, 70, 68 for a 4th place finish. Shingo may never contend in the Masters let along another Major in his career ever again but I really hope he does because this is the kind of player that makes me love the sport and watching the pros. This guy was animated, having fun interacting with the crowds way to go Shingo you made my Masters.

Puma Golf Pack Away Golf Bag Review

Well Puma Canada was good enough to send over their Pack Away Golf Bag a few weeks ago. So here's a little review of one of many new products from Puma Golf this season. I've never had a bag that just carries 4 clubs like the Puma Golf Pack Away Bag so I was eager to test it out. The range it seems lately is where most of my golfing has been which is fine if your shaking off the early Spring rust and trying to groove the swing for the golf season ahead right? So my review is based on a bunch of early season range sessions.

The bag itself came all packed away so once I unzipped it the two ends expanded to expose the full length of the bag and the nice black and grey Puma logo. It's made out of a polyester blend fabric so it's very light to carry from your car to the range. The top is a soft molded rubber that keeps your clubs quite secure. The clubs fit very well into the bag, it easily fits any club whether it's a wedge, 8 iron, driver or 5 wood. You do have to remember there is no padding in this type of bag so be careful where you put it down because if someone steps on it there goes your nice new clubs. When I had it on the range I just placed it on a seat bench while I hit each club or I placed it on a bag stand whichever one was available. If you have head covers for your clubs definitely used them when your using this type of bag as it's just added protection. The shoulder strap for this bag is adjustable and is lightly padded to keep the weight of the bag down as well.

Although I never used it on a course I could definitely see this sort of bag working beautifully on a shorter course or a par 3 course where you might only want to test out a few clubs or just work on your short game. I could also see it being used if your going golfing with your son or daughter and you;'re just introducing them to the game. Put a putter, a couple of irons in this Pack Away Golf Bag and off to the course no worries about being intimidated by too many clubs. You only have 4 so work on getting good with those 4.

The Pack Away Golf Bag has one larger size pocket on the front of the bag which can hold just about anything whether it`s a water bottle, scorecard or extra tees. Right beside the larger pocket Puma has put a small mesh holder that can fit a sleeve or more of balls real nice. Tighten the drawstring and they're secure but with the having the drawstring they are still easy to access especially over a zipper.

Even with a few tees,a scorecard along with a sleeve of balls this bag is ultra light weight just what you want in a Sunday bag. I like the fact this bag can be packed away when not in use and stuffed into your larger golf bag or put away in your golf locker. It's ease of use and simplicity is great for any one who might be looking for a good quality light weight bag plus it's got the Puma style as well so you'll stand out from the regular crowd at the range or your local short course.

This bag will be given away to one lucky winner in Ottawa Golf Blog's first Masters Contest. So hopefully we can get some feedback from the winner as well in a little while.

To Design A Course Or Just Play Them?

This past weekend watching the Masters I thought just how beautiful Augusta National Golf Course came across on T.V. and I don`t even have a HD TV or fancy type system. I was also thinking about the designer of Augusta National Alister MacKenzie and how cool it would be to design a golf course. To have the power to lay out every bunker, fairway and green. Can you imagine being able to place where the bunkers are to be placed. How the greens will slop. You could make the fairway as wide or as narrow as you want for me the fairways would have to be real wide as the driver has been erratic lately. You could take all the courses you've played in your life and put what you like about those holes you've played into your own design.

Now I'm sure there would be no apricot trees or crab apples trees in my design only good healthy oaks but how do these designers know what we the golfers will and won`t like on a golf course. Most designers aren't all the Nicklaus type designer either but how do they come up with these designs obviously for some it`s because they`re a golfing legend (Nicklaus) but for others it must be they just have the eye for detail. I know I'll probably never get to design a golf I guess I'll leave that up to the gentlemen named Carrick, McBroom, and Cooke. Who would want to play a 19 handicap hacker's golf course anyways.

I think this year I'll try to play some of the best these Canadian designers have made and others too. Sometimes golfing goals can be a little different why not a more attainable one.

Ottawa Golf Blog 2009 Masters Contest Results

Well it was a pretty successful Masters Contest with 24 people posting their 3 players in the comments section in under about 3 days of me posting the contest. So not bad we'll have to run another one of these for the next Major in June (U.S. Open) maybe with a little more time to post. While no one picked any of the top 4 players there were a lot of variations of players with Tiger Woods of course being picked by everyone except one individual.

So who actually won the contest well it seems to be a tie between Steve, bedell and Anonymous golfer. So when I get home from work tonight one of my kids will draw the name and I'll post it here for all to see. For now here's how the standings looked after the finish of the 2009 Masters.

Oh! So Many Golf Courses

Oh there's nothing like Spring and the thought of the next round of golf. This year in the Ottawa area we're getting a little treat with the season opening earlier then normal. Although I haven't visited any local courses yet the trips to the range have been amazing. Nothing like seeing the ball fly off a well hit iron shot. So the planning begins for the first rounds of the year. Except all this work is getting in the way. I've got bunch of reviews to do and so little time.

Lately I've even got a few inquiries about doing some reviews of some golf courses that get this aren't even in the Ottawa area. Now most of the reviews I've done have been strictly in Ontario but the chance to do other reviews in places like Myrtle Beach would be awesome. Now I just need these people to step and get me afree hotel stay and I'm there.
